The XP grinder doesn't seem to work in multiplayer, though.  Punching knees doesn't work.

Splash potions of harm can be used instead.

According to minecraftwiki, splash potions fired from a dispenser don't cause mobs to drop XP. That sucks, because if they did you could just hook a dispenser full of splash potions up to a redstone clock of some length (an hour, say) and let the game run. Of course, I can see why Notch wouldn't want to allow that.

What I really wish is that the XP system was much less grindy, to the point where you could get good enchantments without, you know, building mob grinders specifically to farm XP.

That would require crafting a billion splash potions of harm instead of just holding down the punch button.

Don't splash potions have a "blast" radius? I think one potion would kill every skeleton spawned.

Er, I haven't actually used splash potions myself, so I might be wrong.

they do. it's like four blocks even, so it's pretty easy to kill your friends.

And it can go through walls. And they don't kill. Poison and whatever bring you down to half a heart at the very least, right?

... yes, but potions of harm just do direct damage, and level 3+ does over 10 hearts.

Is I wrong that I read that as "potions of ham"?

Please tell me SOMEONE else is at least kind of rolling their eyes at the fact that Minecraft is now groping aimlessly to add THE WORST in 30-year-old game mechanics.

Most people prone to that quit several revisions ago.

I dunno, most prior revisions were something you could live with, so long as you weren't a "Those People On The Internets Who Complain" kind of person. I just fail to see how anyone can really enjoy a quintessential "utterly boring with no redeeming characteristics" XP/Level grinding system. To say nothing of "The End" and it's (ahah) 'Boss'.

I mean, I'm not attached to the game and just play creative once in a while, so this is not me rating or anything. It just strikes me as both hilarious and tragic that arguably the most creative, unique, and interesting game in several years is so hellbent on becoming something so tepid, derivative, and boring.

But hey, I'm not a Swede rolling in money.

What really disappointed me is how Notch completely dropped the ideas he had for multiplayer. Zombie siege, capture the flag, none of that is seeing the light of day.

you can't actually level, i don't know why they're calling it XP. it's more like mana or something? you just spend it to get tools with special properties.

also i daresay CTF/horde mode in a game with pretty much only melee weapons and the ability to build and destroy anything is a bankrupt practice to start with -- see Cortex Command.

Uh, in the 1.9x iterations, your level affects the potency of the enchantments and magical stuff you can make, as well as unlocking some magical creations entirely.

Yeah, experience levels are just spent directly on enchantments and nothing else.  They don't improve or unlock anything, except in so far as you can't spend 27 levels on an enchantment unless you have 27 levels to spend.

This threadsplit sounds more and more like exactly the game I would play all of the time until I died.

Yeah, the XP in this game is more akin to what I would call skill points or ability points - you accrue them until you have enough to spend on what you want, then spend them. Only in this case the enchantment is randomized based on how many skill/magic/whatever points you spend on them.

Anyway, I don't really get why people whine about this so much. If you don't like grinding for XP or enchantments or brewing potions, you don't have to do any of that. You can just build shit until the end of time. And if you do decide you want to do those things, you can build specific contraptions to aid the process. Either way it doesn't interfere with the rest of the game.

Really, the only problem I have with the XP system as implemented is that it needs some serious tweaking - you can grind mobs for hours and still only have enough magic points to buy 1 or 2 middling enchantments. Even level 40 tends to not get you much (though I am running around with a diamond pickaxe with efficiency IV and unbreaking III, which is pretty cool). It's ridiculous. It's almost like the game isn't finished!

Expand on this!

Specifically, on how Cortex Command as a functioning game and now a graphical demo actually panned out. It has always fascinated me yet I've never really felt compelled to get the game.

I'd say the XP in minecraft is more akin to gold. Except the magic weapons you buy are randomized depending on how much gold you spend.
