I'm really surprised this isn't mentioned in the article, but: the music is awful. At least in the first few hours that I played.

It's pretty okay so far, Thad.  I don't know about giving it an A just yet, but so far, everything about it's screaming A- right now.

I'm kinda looking for more detail.  What's good, what's bad?  Gameplay, dialogue, that kinda thing.

I'm not very far in yet, but:

Dialog - I may not be the best judge, but it's not bad at all.  You get lots of options to choose from, and the top one is almost always the "get through the conversation as quick as possible" one.  The game also gives you lots of opportunities to say hurtful things to Amy.

Gameplay - Of whatever complaints I have of the game, this is the most valid.  The negative status effects you can use on your enemies are things like "Weakened," "Vulnerable," "Distracted," "Sluggish," and so on.  It's a little hard to remember what all these effects do, but I guess it should be expected of me to remember them in a game like this.  However, several characters' special attacks are devoted solely to administering these status effects, and the game doesn't display what these attacks do when selecting them during a battle.  This information is easily available from the menu when not in a battle, so I guess that's more stuff you have to remember or, God forbid, write down.

The music that plays during fights is okay, but some of the overworld music is just unacceptably bad.  It's so bad, I'd considered it to be attributed to the fact that you need to patch the game to get it to run on an R4, and that was affecting things in-game.  If you just load the rom straight up, you'll get a "Can't read save file" message, and even after patching it, it's currently freezing on a white screen on startup.  Dirty piracy aside, if the retail game has the same music as what  I've heard, you'll be utterly disgusted with it upon entering the second area.

Pretty much what Dooly said so far.

In terms of combat, I'm not a huge fan of what's obviously shoehorned (and forced for the most part!) touch screen functionality.  Selecting anything means tapping the option with the stylus and the enemy in question if you're going to send Sonic rocketing toward it while the special attacks range from 'drag stylus along a set path', 'tap spots on screen with the stylus at the right moment for extra damage (in the case of enemy attacks, cause them to do less damage or miss altogehter)' and 'tap really quick'.

Granted, doing damn near anything means putting the stylus on the touch screen in some way.  Moving Sonic is akin to running around in Diablo.

It's going to give me carpal tunnel in my genetically superior left hand.  ::(:

Honic Chronicles is like a weird combination of Mario RPG combat and Mass Effect's wordiness. It is really, really good, though -- Robotnik's characterization is actually what sold me on it completely.
You're going through Metropolis to stop Robotnik's old doom laser, which he can't control since Sonic broke everything, and have to fight some old security bots. After the boss fight Tails is like, "Wow, they were really tough!" and Robotnik responds with "Yep, they don't make 'em like I used to."
So Robotnik acts the way Bowser is supposed to at this point.  Works for me!

Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario games are good.

Sonic games are generally bad.

Sonic RPG is being compared to Mario RPG games.

Ergo Sonic RPG is potentially ok or better?

Is this what you guys are trying to tell me, that maybe I should buy Sonic RPG and it'll be enjoyable.

I'm a little confused because it's been seven years(Sonic Adventure 2) since a Sonic game was even tolerable!

I think they're trying to say it's leaps and bounds better than any Sonic game but it's very suspiciously almost exactly like something you've played already.

Well the GBA sonic games were all good, so it shouldn't really be that surprising that there's a good sonic game on DS.

You... you might say that no matter what the era Sonic's gameplay falls FLAT!!!

Nvm, pun doesn't really work because Sonic BattleFighter Kindalame wasn't that great either.

Music aside, some of the sound effects in Chronicles are also pretty fucking horrible.  It's one of the common menu ones and you run into it very early in.

Because I am a Bioware whore I am going to have to play it. Tell me that it's got the standard suite of sound channel (izzat what they calld'?) volume controls? Can I turn the voice acting up to audible, the SFX down to negligible, and the music down to not destroying my ears?

Music aside, some of the sound effects in Chronicles are also pretty fucking horrible.

I wonder if I was alone in thinking you were talking about Steambot Chronicles for a moment there.

Did I say one?  Oops.  There's more.

The item-get dialog is irritating and the audio will kind of hiccup as you try to cancel out of it before the sound is done.  And you will.  Often.

It might just be me, but I don't think Bioware has ever been great in the music department.  Everything from Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic and Neverwinter Nights is completely forgettable and I remember none of it.
