Reduced to Ruin: Sonic the Hedgehog
« on: March 26, 2008, 09:25:56 AM »

So I'm looking at some trailers for Silent Hill V, and I couldn't help notice that the camera stuck awfully close to the player character's back. Like, almost as if it was glued to the back of his peculiarly well groomed head. Then I remembered what this guy is supposed to be: a veteran. A fucking former soldier. Those Mark Ecko motherfuckers turned my god damned Silent Hill into a fucking third-person shooter.

Bonus :fail: : attached is a picture of a recently revealed character from an upcoming game. Whoever correctly guesses what game she's from first wins the privilege to ball up into a fetal position and cry before anybody else.

So uh this new Sonic game looks better than the last 8 million Sonic console games, but why is everyone a werewolf now?

The best part is how they're also throwing fucking Keroro Gunsou characters into the game.

"Best".

Man, when are we getting a new GOOD Wario game that's not part of the Wario Ware franchise?

Regarding : I hope that's just Shadow hate. I liked Sonic Battle. :>_>:

Anyway, I honestly don't know how Wizardry 8 avoided the fate that both Might and Magic IX and Ultima IX shared (if you ignore the fact that Sir-Tech tanked soon after.) Guess dropping roman numerals helps.

Parish previews the Sonic RPG in the new EGM, and it boils down to "it's a lot like Mario RPG with more loops".  Which I'm going to assume is pretty much what we all figured, but hell, that still sounds pretty good.

If by loops you do mean literally loops and rings then that would be pretty appropriate.

It's interesting to note that Parish didn't like Mario RPG (bottom of page).  Hopefully this was not a direct comparison on his part.

... he didn't?  Man, as if there weren't enough reasons to just discount everything that comes out of that dude's mouth already.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

Well, the comparison in EGM was favorable.

He also referred to it as "Sonic 3D Blast done right", and summarized with "It looks like a clever fusion of two very different game types, benefitting from BioWare's refined RPG sensibilities."

This thread is now about games we love.

Seriously, the comparison with Mario RPG just changed my mind from "yeah, I heard about that" to "I CAN HAS PREORDR PLZ?"

Joystiq impressions.  Not much new, but:

And most characters team up with another specific member for a combined attack.

I have been saying for ages now that it's taken the rest of the genre more than a decade to catch up with Chrono Trigger.

Oh, except:

Quote
Before wandering through the world, I picked a team of Sonic and three other characters, building my own party.

Oh hey, a four-man party.  Haven't seen THOSE that often since...before Chrono Trigger.

And finally:

I get nervous when a big franchise is loaned to another company, wondering how much control Sega is retaining. Hopefully Bioware has been trusted to have its run of the Sonic universe.

Having spent years on a mailing list with some of the creative team from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic, I can vouch that's EXACTLY the thing people should be worried about.  Sega has editorially kept Sonic on a tight leash, basically raising a big fuss any time he was portrayed as anything but a one-dimensional representation of what 8-year-old boys think is cool.  'TUDE FTW.

Course, in fairness, Bioware tends to assign personality to the PC through huge dialogue trees, and keep the supporting cast simple.  (Note: do not own 360; have not played Mass Effect yet.  Correct me if things have changed since KotOR.)

EDIT: More thoughts from Parish.

Gamers with little patience for the likes of Big the Cat and Amy Rose will derive great pleasure from blowing them off with a snarky retort.
