Skies of Valkyria
« on: December 13, 2008, 07:08:10 PM »

I love turn based strategy games.

I love RPGs

I love bullshit. You know bullshit, and probably love it too. Multiple plot lines for non-main characters, micromanagement on ridiculous levels, such as finding out which members of your team like which other members so that they work better together.

I do dislike, however, unit production while on a stage

I dislike spending twenty levels before you learn to use every game feature.

Playing Valkyria Chronicles gives me erections.

Finally picked up Valkyria Chronicles and it's been keeping me pretty entertained.

It's like Sega is capable of making good games so long as Sonic isn't in the title!

Valkyria Chronicles is a blast and I'm really glad that it went on sale. Thanks to the remainder of my Christmas Gamestop gift card, I only had to pay two bucks for it.

I really wish Valkyria Chronicles were on more than just the PS3. This is primarily due to my totally heterosexual lust for the team that brought us Skies of Arcadia.

It doesn't help that Vyse and Aika are playable characters. (And Fina shows up, in a way.) Also, there's a scene where the enemy generals are introduced that is very similar to the equivalent scene in SoA.

Vyse and Aika are soldiers that you have the option of using. They don't have any part in the story or anything like that and you don't even ever have to use them. But why wouldn't you? (Oh wait, because the story characters give you extra turns to use in battle and if you don't use them you have a disadvantage. You can still have V&A as secondary soldiers.)

I like the hybrid RTS/SRPG/Quasi-Third Person Shooter battle system Valkyria Chronicles has going.  I really ought to actually play it more, but man, I've got so many games on my plate as it is.

It sounds like a fantastic game, and I've heard nothing but good about it from those who have played it. This only serves to make things worse for me.

Further supporting my theory that I am in fact the only person in space who did not like Skies of Arcadia.

I never played it.  Given its universal popularity I'm sure it'd go straight onto the pile of Games I Wish People Would Shut Up About right with SotN, Chrono Trigger and River City Ransom.

It's a game that probably only holds up well if you played it at its release, but not so much for rose-tinted glasses as a firm frame of reference.

The game oozes so much style and personality and flat-out awesome world-building it's ridiculous.  Also happens to be the only RPG in the entire world I've seen do the mysterious timid stranger girl + spunky childhood friend love triangle well, AND have all three of those characters be likable.

I always got a huge kick out of the minor purely aesthetic affects, too, like your other party members visibly swinging their swords and blocking enemy attacks during your combat turn.

Skies of Arcadia magically embraced every RPG cliche and did them so well that you ended up with a pretty superior product. I'd say it holds up well even today. The only truly terrible part was the random-encounter rate in your airship and it's a part of the storyline to acquire a permanent Moogle bangle.

Also the Bad Guy Posse fucking ruled.

I just played through it again over the last week or two, and I can confirm that, at least for me, it holds up. The characters are all likable, it never takes itself too seriously, and the pacing is fantastic.

The only thing Skies or Arcadia didn't have going for it was pretty much everything battle-related. Gaining abilities wasn't satisfying, battles happened too often and were too hard, magic was mostly useless.

Everything else was just... fun. It was a game hellbent on having fun. Good times for all.

welp

I'm pretty sure I did not just dream up playing Grandia, and that wasn't fun even without a retarded encounter rate and load times roughly the speed of the Earth cooling.

soooooo

So, what, you liked everything about the game except the actual game?
