The encounter rate didn't bother me that much even now, and if you want to play it, but that's a concern, just play the GameCube version, where they halved it, but doubled exp gain.

My favorite part of SoA was the potential. Playing through it, I kept thinking "this is a really fun game with some great ideas, I can't wait for a sequel where they refine them and make an even better game".

I wanted to replay the game for the current RPG Fun Club over at Talking Time, but my GCN copy is missing.

I will concede that the GameCube version (which I never played but understand addressed encounter rates/load times) would improve Skies of Arcadia to only being as awful as Grandia.

The same concept with modern technology and a lot of mechanical polish would be entirely too good.

My problem with Skies of Arcadia is that the Phantasy Star team apparently hadn't improved their ability to create dramatic tension or study a character since Nei.

Valkyria Chronicles could be fucking Shakespeare for all I know or care, but the most lasting impression I got from SoA was playing it within two months of Valkyrie Profile and seeing a more engaging story in the prologue of the latter than the entirety of the former.

I still wish I'd had a chance to finish Skies of Arcadia.

I was dating a girl when it came out and I was playing it on her Dreamcast. The relationship was going sour and I knew it was going to end soon, so I was actually trying my damnedest to finish the game in a couple days, while I still had the chance. Sadly, no dice.

The funniest part is that's the only thing I regret about that relationship. That girl was DUMB.

Give Sonic Team Team Sonic Sonic Team Sonic at least that much credit.

After that shit I've been like  for every video game death since.  The bar's just way too fucking high.

(Though I'll admit she wasn't much of a studied character.  I will say that Nei's palette swap was, but then again she was a palette swap of Nei so that probably doesn't count.)

(Also, the entirety of PSO's single-player mode was a study of one character you never even saw, so there's that.)

Sonic Team didn't make Skies of Arcadia, it was Overworks.

The ship battles were fun. The regular battles... cool ideas, tediously executed. Nice dungeons, unconventional setting, outstanding localization, slick storytelling (though the story itself is nothing to write home about), infectious mood... it did a lot right.

The best part about playing Skies of Arcadia when it first came out is that I was young, so Gilder was especially awesome.

I never got tired of...

COME ON...DANCE FOR ME!

And bullets.

so i got a ps3 and Valkyria Chronicles and aside from a slight weirdness with loading movies in it (probably caused by dirty lens on the second hand ps3 i bought) i've enjoyed what i've played

i am in love with the SINGLE CHARACTERS DONT LEVEL UP, THEIR CLASS DOES thing.

i no longer have to worry about one person getting over leveled due to them getting more kills just due to luck.

i do dislike how enemy lancers (the anti-tank unit) normally die from pretty much any gunfire, but become incredibly hard to kill the second they crouch behind cover.
