My superstition at least has a valid reasoning behind it.

...which makes it not a superstition.

WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU EXPECTING WHEN YOU CLICKED THIS THREAD TITLE?

No, my bias is that I saw it. The confirmation wasn't 100% accurate, because people make shit up. I am fully aware that it may have been swamp gas/etc. If I saw a flying dog, I would be extremely skeptical of what I saw. I wouldn't pretend I didn't see it, and I would still be somewhat surprised that there was a wiki page for it, detailing behaviors I observed it exhibiting.

But like I said previously, I have absolutely zero interest in convincing anyone.

I didn't quote that part of your post for that reason.  The karma thing, on the other hand...

I believe in the Dreamlands that Lovecraft wrote of in "Celephais" and "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath".

I believe in them, because I have recurring dreams of being in a small town that does not exist. I remember a handful of vistas of this town; all of them look and feel like they are from my hometown, but none of them actually exist, there or anywhere else that I have ever been.

I'm not sure "what reason" you're referring to.

Also, the Karma thing is more along the lines of "faith", and is a lot shakier than just saying "I saw a shadow thing and then found a wiki page that was like 75% accurate about it" because, well, both of those things are true.

I believe in Karma because I have observed that things tend to balance out over time. I obviously cannot prove this and I am fully aware that because I believe in it I look for it which reinforces my belief, etc.

But then, the title of the thread isn't "Superstitions that can be replicated in a lab", so. I tend to believe in Karma based on my experiences and observations, using as much logic and as little bias as I am consciously able to.

I have no problem discussing this here. Don't take my "I have zero interest in convincing anyone" as "I have zero interest in talking about it." I just don't care if you think I'm crazy or not, nor if you share my beliefs.

Just that I didn't think your anecdote about the shadow applied to confirmation bias because you probably didn't believe in them before.

Right. I guess what I mean is that compared to actually seeing the whatever, the wiki page didn't go very far as to convincing me the whatever existed. Wiki says a lot of things. My eyes don't usually lie to me.

I'm religious.  :nyoro~n:

On the other hand, I've never had a super natural experience and I don't really beleive that there's anything supernatural out there to experience. I don't believe in luck or karma.

I don't think I have any superstitious habits that aren't prescribed religious rituals. Of prescribed religious rituals, I do feel better after the priest says my sins are forgiven or after I receive a blessing, even though I don't believe in either of those things. I pray sometimes too even though I don't belive prayer does anything metaphysical.

number 57
number 47

numbers 42 and 37.

42, obvious association with a certain book, but it tends to accompany good luck.  37 is something I've noticed that people choose tremendously often when they're coming up with an arbitrary number, ie, "37 minutes later" etc

Oddly enough, I actually don't have a real "lucky number" and I kind of wish I did.  It's nice to have something to fall back on when you're being indecisive, or just want a personal flair to something numeric.

I go with 6 as my favorite number usually but it's just because it's kind of mathematically interesting (hexagons are cool).  It lacks any damn numerological style (biblically it's a crappy choice), which is a shame.

I do this all the time, and I do in fact blame it on Clerks.

I had a book on magic tricks when was a kid that mentione the fact that given a choice between 1 and 4 people would usually choose 3, between 1 and 10 people would usually choose 7, and between 1 and 50 people would usually choose 37, so I guess it's just a kind fo cultural thing.

I have three dogs -- one huge dog, two small dogs (a Schnauzer and a Chinese Crested). If and when the Schnauzer finds a way out of my backyard, he inevitably runs a mile's distance in less than twenty minutes; and the Chinese Crested will always follow him, because the Chinese Crested doesn't like being left out. It should also be noted that, in Houston, if an animal is ever alone on the street it will be hit by a car. (Thankfully, the Schnauzer's fairly intelligent, and keeps himself off the roads).

Anyway, a majority of the dog's escapes are caused because the gate to the backyard from the driveway is old and crusty, and is sometimes difficult to shut. As such, whenever I let my dogs into the backyard, I always always check to make sure that it's closed shut. And when I let them back in I make sure that it's closed shut. And when I leave my house, I make sure that I close it shut (and if I don't, I start getting anxious, and I'm always positive that when I return I'll find both my small dogs smeared across the street in front of my house).

Quantum immortality. It's less of superstition as it is ODDBALL SCIENCE. And I don't believe in it so much as I'd like to believe in it, because it would make life a lot more fun (walking into traffic, jumping out of airplanes, etc., etc.), as well as solve that whole death question.

Aside from that, nothing. The world is a cold and logical place for me. I do have a few compulsions regarding eating at certain times, walking certain paths, and so on, but I justify those to myself by how the brain likes familiar things.

Quatum immortality doesn't seem so oddball as long as you can believe there are multiple universes. Plus, you can still do that whole walking into traffic and jumping out of airplanes thing, there's just no guarantee and no way to measure if this is the universe in which you got lucky.

I'm sure if you think about it there have been several times in which you've barely survived or made a choice that saved you some trouble. So really, it has no practical applications, and you are free to do all the dangerous stuff you want but even if quantum immortality is actually real, you're gonna die eventually.

Alternately, you are constantly dying an infinite number of deaths, every infiniteth fraction of a nanosecond, for the rest of infinity, infinitely.  You really suck at this game.
