And it also is an issue of not wanting the guilty conscious of watching the fucks 'going galt' and then realizing that they can't survive on their own.  And the subsequent watching them beg to undo what they did as they slowly starve and drain more federal money away than is needed.  And them leaving would fuck our economy up even worse.

You'd feel guilty about watching them starve after they realise they can't survive on their own? I'd mostly feel bad about them draining federal money that could go to something more useful. Watching them beg to come back would be the fun part.

But yeah, we can't let them leave because it would fuck up the economy. Ah well.

While I understand where you're coming from, let's be realistic.  If "Texas" seceded, it wouldn't be some unanimous decision from the hivemind of every man, woman and child in the state; it'd be something imposed upon the populace by the leaders.  Even with majority support of the populace there'd be plenty of people there that didn't want it and yet have no means to escape it, due to any reason people don't up and move whenever they want (finances, family, etc).

I don't think guilty is the right word, but I would feel bad about watching those innocents suffer being dragged along, yes.

This is all so hypothetical it's almost ridiculous, I know.  But people do need to be reminded that the blowhards talking about secession aren't "Texas", they don't speak for everyone, and they're jerks for acting like they do.  Fake populism is despicable.

And that includes Chuck Norris, he's dead to me.

Romosome brings up a valid point.  Rick Perry and all the other pro-secessionists are forgetting that Obama got the biggest support of any Democrat since Clinton's re-election, and is the first to do so as a first term president in quite some time.

2008: 44% Obama
2004: 38% Kerry
2000: 38% Gore
1996: 43% Clinton
1992: 37% Clinton (Need to pick statewide results in 1992 General Election)

That's close to half the state that probably doesn't want to secede.  Although, apparently Democrats more likely to support secession than Republicans.  That is a Zogby poll done last July, though, so take it with several grains of salt.

Is... is Texan secession really a serious issue? (Honest question, as I am not in Texas and do not place a high priority on Texas' local issues.)

Having lived in Texas for 16 years, to them, it's a very serious thing, Bongo. "Texas Pride" is HUGE down there, and all I really see this as is just the next step up in that.

Honestly, it's so cute watching you guys discuss the details of secession movements (and the legality thereof) for the first time.

35% think Texas would be better off as separate country.  That's out of all groups.

The Republicans, however, support it 48% to 48%, but 51% approve of Perry tough talking about it.

Just how popular is Perry, anyway? Texans on other boards seem to think he is a moron, but they're also liberals.

Psst, I'm aware. It's the fact that he's implying this is a new issue in the US which is bugging me.

Oh, so it's one of those pet causes that people get up in arms over but never actually do anything about, but with a strong regional concentration. Got it.

Pretty much, yeah.

Although, if WFE has taught me anything, its that a secession can and will work so long as you take all the popular kids with you.

Should we be worried that the real-world political discourse of our day resembles retarded arguments on internet forums between mouth-breathing 12 year olds more and more every day?

No.  We let them continue speaking their mouths off in session.  Incidents like this make them vulnerable when a worthy opponent requires to take them down come election time.

Besides, every nation deserves their John Baird.

(Note to admin:  Attempted to hyperlink youtube video to the name, and instead the video auto-embedded.  Is there a fix?)

Also:  It seems like all this succession talk is making non-credible politicians seem credible.  I wonder how long that will last...

The reason this secession talk is even an issue is because the governor of a state brought the subject up.  We've had crazy secessionist groups for years, and the fringe right probably actively supports it without bringing it up.  But when our governor comes out and starts talking about it, that's when things get weird.

Funny thought:

America:  if you are able to convince the texans they want to secede, there can be benefits:

- Obesity epidemic solved
- No more worries about the border to Mexico

There's possibly more, but at the start, the concept of the USA getting rid of Texas almost makes sense..

You know, Texas isn't the only state that touches Mexico.  I don't really understand the obesity comment.  There are, however, liberal advantes to a Texasless US
