The thing about social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace, or Deviantart isn't that they themselves create this culture of fetishism around terrible things, it's just that they make it easier for the people that do.  They also allow access to really good things as well.  I've found artists on Deviant that I really enjoy, but it also frustrates me when no talent hacks get thousands of page views.

Though complaints about DeviantArt's design and functionality are totally valid.

As for the cliquism, I can attest to that personally. I know I'm hardly the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I actually have ZERO comments for the past three months (other than Koipond), incredibly low traffic, and all the favourites are of an old Britannia propaganda piece I did for a friend years ago, that's in my scraps and is among my worst works. Why? Fanart and patriotic shit get searched and fav'd.

Actually, the lack of feedback has been a big reason I just drifted away from drawing. I've been working for a complete and utter void for nearly ten years now and damn is it hard to push myself forward after that long. No working relationships with other artists or writers, no qualified criticisms, no help or advice, nothing at all.

Ahh. Fuck it. What's a lost decade here or there? Sour grapes.

Post more to WFE or something. I'm kinda sad to read to read this, your art was always pretty great(Pedovan and GOOOOOAAAAAAAAL, right? Two of my favorite pieces.) Although it is pretty standard for total silence to crush creative input, it is a shame you have received this from DeviantArt.

artists ain't necessarily website programmers, chief.

I realize that. But some of them ARE graphic designers, layout experts and other things of that ilk.

Yeah, but not UI designers.  Usability and aesthetics are generally at odds with each other, so when you get a clusterfuck of people calling themselves "artists" trying to design an interface, what you're probably going to get is some dadaist piece that you have to "appreciate" in order to even be able to use.

Yeah, no word of a lie, the sketch thread is the most feedback I've got on anything I've done in maybe... four years?

I mean I could play the game, and post endlessly on other deviantart guys' pages, but that's a hell of a lot of effort posting things I don't particularly want to bother with just to get an uncertain result (increased traffic may just mean more idiots hitting the 'favourite' button, or more of the extremely occasional "LOL AWESOME XD" posts).

There's more professional sites, where most of the posters are big names making a living doing amazing things, but those guys don't have the time of day for someone who only made it to 'half-competent', doubly so for a guy who's the same age as most of them rather than an up-and-coming 16-year old.

I actually wish I was a lot worse sometimes, because then I could just quit forever with a clean conscience.

Oh that's more than fair. It just amazes me that there isn't even one admin who actually thinks the layout and design of that site is indescribably awful. I mean, if nothing else - who the hell picked that colour?

Clearly you need to lie about your key words I_M.  Just say your picture is relevant to pokemon or something.  Then people will have to run into your stuff by accident.

I've only gone to deviantart on purpose 3 times ever.  Instead I take the weeaboo route and go to pixiv.  Which is basically a Japanese deviantart with a better.... everything.  Well, except for content in any language besides Japanese.

The funny part is that I *AM* in fact very abusive of keywords. I usually have over 20 keywords. Anything remotely relevant (and a few things that aren't) goes in.

Dear DeviantArt,

I'm just talking to myself, but I wouldn't mind having thumbnails for my sensitive content again, filtering so I don't have to deal with all the anthro garbage that's been stinking up the place, and a simpler way to upload my material besides this archaic multiple-file temporary storage bullshit. And if it's not too much to ask, see if you can flay alive all the porn seekers who register just so they can favorite vore junk.

XOXO, Yoji

PS: Thanks to all the disappointed fangirls who gave me an abnormal spike in hits just because I mentioned "yaoi" in passing.

Seriously, I'd give a kidney to anyone who can think of a better alternative. Even if every couple blue moons or so, some drop of distilled awesome manages to come up.

You know what's funny about how far DevArt has fallen?

For years the place was mocked mercilessly for being a the single greatest cesspit on the internet of Furry Shit. When you went to the homepage, at least a third of it would be bad anthro shit.

But no more! The sheer quantity of awful stickmen and bad photos taken - basically anything any fool can do - has become such a torrent that it washes away even the furry pr0n (most of the time). It's basically become the MS Paint version of MySpace/Facebook/Twitter/whateverthefuck.

Side note: Can we all stop pretending that the Daily Deviations are anything other than a circle jerk? My favourites list is loaded with incredible artists who are nineteen times as good as me, less than who have less than half of even my meager traffic, and no Daily Deviations whatsoever.

More importantly the overall quality of Daily Deviations has fallen so low it's downright embarassing. I used to actually discover new artists that way sometimes - not any more!

Hell, it occurs to me that I would be completely happy to start on a new general art site that hasn't quite become such an apalling failure yet, but there just isn't one. God damn artists are useless.

But hey, it could be even worse! I remember how bad it was before... remember Elfwood?

I remember that there was a notDeviant Art somewhere out there. I found this really cool picture of a naked, red headed pirate girl.
