Hell, it occurs to me that I would be completely happy to start a new general art site

two birds, one stone.

My layout and code would be even worse then the current one.

PENCILS, PAPER, THESE I UNDERSHTAND! BUT THESE COMPUTERS? OY!

There is a reason why a replacement hasn't been made already:  It's hard to make a good one.

Half-true.  It's hard to convince everyone it's worth their time to import their DevArt stuff.  Give them a tool to do so easily and you may have a better shot.

Regarding the article Brent posted above, Facebook has already faced a ton of issues with property rights on what you choose to post, and the speculative nature of that article sorta sounds like yes, if Facebook wanted the same troubles they've already had, they could offer the kind of support that your (very limited, who posts any information of note on FB) information could become profitable from.  However, being that they've combated that sort of issue as it's come up and how the developers have proven themselves smart enough to avoid that pitfall, I'd say they won't open it up quite that much.

artists ain't necessarily website programmers, chief.

I realize that. But some of them ARE graphic designers, layout experts and other things of that ilk.

Yeah, but not UI designers.  Usability and aesthetics are generally at odds with each other, so when you get a clusterfuck of people calling themselves "artists" trying to design an interface, what you're probably going to get is some dadaist piece that you have to "appreciate" in order to even be able to use.

Oh that's more than fair. It just amazes me that there isn't even one admin who actually thinks the layout and design of that site is indescribably awful. I mean, if nothing else - who the hell picked that colour?

The thing you're not realizing here is that DeviantArt's website design, having been created by artists, is immune to criticism of it's flaws. The layout and design of the website are art. You can't improve art, man!

Back in the day, when I were a member of that (I was in high school, give me a break) I tried to be a harsh critic. I seem to recall a handful of people actually took it well, but then there were the arguments I got in about How-Are-You-Ever-Going-To-Improve-If-You-Don't-Know-What-You're-Doing-Wrong versus Why-Are-You-Being-So-Mean-To-My-Friend.

Anyway. Twitters! Who's got the Twitters? I've got the Twitters. Have you got the Twitters?

I honestly think I should get a Twitter.  I spend so much time here dumping one-liners on people that I may as well go get a public wastebucket to throw them into.

I guess if you're interested in being updated every time I accidentally jump into a wall, you could follow my Twitter.

Nevermind, I've been psycho-blogging all this time.

Keep up the good work, Mr. O'Connell.

DA is really shitty. It blows my mind how poorly the interface is designed and how annoying it is to add a single god damned picture.

Oh well. I find being in a decent artists circle is a good way to get motivated and get some good advice (as opposed to a bad one which will motivate you.. to be terrible!).  Oh well. DA could easily be out done by another site, but I wonder how hard it would be to have the userbase actually care enough to move. Maybe not as hard as I think!

Anyways, totally watching Mongrel now. I've always superfuckingloved your artwork.

The thing about twitter, and you can judge for yourself whether this is awesome or terrible, is that no matter what, your posts look like the mad ravings of a manic-depressive hummingbird.

Both usernames I would choose for twitter are taken! Good thing I'm not interested.

Speaking of social networking, recently a lot of my teenage cousins added me to their Facebook friends lists (and I added them in turn). Now my Facebook front page is full of teenage drama and stuff like "(So-and-so) is a fan of (snack item or actor)."
