I bought some sole fillets the other day, and figured I'd put them in a pan for a while with some butter and onions and green bell peppers and parsley. You know, something simple with ingredients I like.
When the stuff started stinking up my kitchen, I was a little worried but not too much. I mean, good food sometimes smells bad, especially when it comes to fish. When I put it in my mouth, though... My brain immediately started sending death signals, like "if you stop eating this poison right now there's still a chance to leave a beautiful if slightly smelly corpse". It was epic bad, the kind of taste you hear about and consider as myth, like those cartoon characters with legendarily awful cooking abilities. And all the while I'm like "there's ten bucks' worth of fish in there dude you gotta at least wring some nutrition out of it" and slowly shoveling that crap into my mouth, trying to detect a hint of flavor that I might have recognized and liked. But no, every aroma in that dish had somehow mutated into foul, nasty vomit-flavored garbage.
The texture was okay though.
I put the leftovers in the fridge, but when I got it out earlier today with the hopes that time would have mellowed it, it turned out to be even worse. So I threw it away.
I know the fish was fresh, and I've made similar recipes before, so I still don't know what went wrong. Oh well.
