I did decently well in Type 2 Tournaments when I played (Masques/Invasion) The game store I went to mostly just held local non offical things, the prizes being store credit and stuff.

Every few weeks all of us would chip in $15, buy a whole box of boosters, and each claim a few. We'd tear them all open right there and wheel & deal. Only rule was that you couldn't use cards other than those from that box....which lead to such interesting things as "Trade you a value meal for that Rebel Informer"

Playing a competitive deck at local tournaments for most any game will run you about 200 to 400 a year depending on which deck you're playing and how much prize support you get from tournaments. That's no more expensive than seeing new movies at the theater regularly. The daunting thing about miniatures games is that the initial buy in is around 200 or even a little more. But really that's no different from any random gaming console.

They're expensive hobbies, but not more so than a lot of other fairly common hobbies. Not unless you're going to big cons on a regular basis anyhow.

Actually, the problem has become so bad that WotC has started tinkering with rarities, set sizes and frequencies of sets coming out in an effort to avoid driving players away from the game due to the sheer cost.

Ironically, the scheme is doing exactly that. And yet the secondary market is stronger than ever! Go figure, huh?

The secondary market for Magic has always been fairly good for retailers, if they have a freaking clue what the values are.

All other CCGs singles tend to be poison.  Sometimes Pokemon and Yugioh work in some regions for retailers, based on local demand, but most others are toxic.

There's a reason why magic has been around forever, and they're doing their damnedest to keep it that way.

I spoke to a former Warhammer player who explained that the time and effort involved in collecting the army is part of the draw. It's like MadMaxJr says, Warhammer is as much a craft hobby as it is a wargame.

I'll take a photo of my 'workshop' when I get home, to give you an idea just how much craft hobby there is.

I need to see if the game store in the area would be willing to share a crash course in miniature painting, because I'd like to paint minis for characters in tabletop gaming.  Didn't you post something earlier in the thread that was a primer (pun not intended) on painting, MAx?  Plus, the store is a combination icecream store/comic/game store that seems to focus on YuGiOh and Pokeymans.

Ice cream / comics / hobby games?  Really?  THIS EXISTS?

Jesus christ they're going to make fatbeards incapable of moving, while surrounded by expensive things they want..... GEINUS.

If you want the full breakdown on how to paint models with pictures, I suppose I could start a tutorial here.

Actually, the problem has become so bad that WotC has started tinkering with rarities, set sizes and frequencies of sets coming out in an effort to avoid driving players away from the game due to the sheer cost.

Which is why, when you open a Shards of Alara package, you have a high chance of getting one out of five uncommon creatures that does nothing but summon a specific mythic rarity creature from your deck.

for the non-magic players, mythic rares appear at the rate of ONE EVERY EIGHT BOOSTER PACKS. And there's fifteen of them.

Can we just go back to '100 blank white cards' yet?

Aardvark's Comics.

Only flaw in their plan is that the gaming tables are upstairs, above the retail floor.

Yeah, Type 1 tournaments occur about once every other moon, unfortunately.

Who said anything about tournaments? I said I play this game, not "LOL I am a masochist!"

Let me tell you... you commit to ANY expensive/collectible hobby long enough, you eventually do it only when you want to - and on your terms - or you learn to hate it.

Actually, that brings up another lament. Years back, the single most awesome group of people that I had fun playing MTG with was the older crowd. People who were perfectly ordinary 30, 40, or 50-somethings, whose only gaming-related vice was a little Magic now and then. These were stable, mature, and above all FUN people. They made interesting decks and generally had a good time. Some even got their kids involved (one of them, my old friend Dave, had a horrible rivalry with his 15 year old son... Dave took it stride and had great fun goading his son on, but like any good teenager trying to show up his dad, the son took it dead serious. Watching Jerry, negotiate, plead, scheme, outright attack, and otherwise do everything in his power to make sure his dad was knocked out of multiplayer games first was some of the most enjoyable gaming I've ever participated in).

I don't know ANYBODY like this who plays MTG anymore. Not a single person. And I haven't in years. I know a couple of old-timers, but they're gamers. They may be a bit older than most and somewhat more sensible, but they're still gamers at core. Technically my wife is an exception, but that's kind of like "My mom says I'm cool." i.e. it does't really count. I'd say that nine out of ten games of MTG my wife or I play is with each other. If I was being honest I'd say that most MTG players have ALWAYS been intolerable twits, nothing new there, but there used to be a spectrum of players at least.

Sean K Reynolds has some pages on painting miniatures. His technique: Spray them white, then colour in with acrylic paint pens.
