News Sources
« on: April 01, 2008, 10:29:18 PM »

All right.  Have managed to stop reading Huffington Post, and am much happier for it but feel like I'm less up on the news.  (Sorta like when I quit reading Slashdot, but different subject matter.)  With Stewart and Colbert in reruns last week, I found myself wondering if there was really no news whatsoever besides Clinton lying about Bosnia, or if I was missing something.

So anyway.  Good sources of information.  Google News is a good start, of course, but skewed in favor of whatever the MSM are reporting.

So, all right.  Where do you guys get your news?

BBC News Front Page gathers world news without much US or Europe-centrism. I keep it on iGoogle along with Google News Top Stories and a local newspaper.

Good call.

Though I don't have a problem with sources that are US-centric -- I live there, after all --, I just want to avoid the usual bullshit associated with the mainstream press.

The entirety of my news sources, in no particular order:

I'm not being facetious; Thad's posts are one of my preferred sources of political and world news. He's like a filtered news aggregator, except with intelligent and sensible filters.

I can second this.

And Thad still claims that nobody would read his blog.

Eh, more that other people are already saying what I'm saying.  When I have a unique perspective (I'm still amused by that "Obama plagiarized an 18-year-old Simpsons episode" post) I'll share it.

It's different here because this is a forum, and, at least ideally, I have other people to respond to my posts.  (Running a popular blog with a comments section is not the same thing, at all.)

Still, it bears thinking about.  The Siegel story I posted about in the copyright thread has me reading up a lot more on the subject, and it's really a heartbreaking story.  And there's so much about copyright law that just makes no goddamn sense.  (Yeah, it's great that Congress gave creators the right to cancel copyright transfers, but...you have to wait 56 years before you can do it?  56 YEARS?)  Really I need to give Men of Tomorrow a read.

...Anyway.  Pleased (and frightened) to hear I'm a major news source for some folks.  Keep those suggestions coming so I can continue to be a good one.

Feministing.com. It's news, but it also gets me thinking about inequity and perception and stuff.

I run a subscription to The Economist as its professionalism as a news journal compares with the BBC.  While they have a very capitalist (right of center fiscally, left of center socially) viewpoint and are not afraid to use the term "populist" to anyone which gives the faintest reminder of the old US populist party, they do so stepping back with a detailed description of the event that it focuses on rather than a sensationalist summary.

They also have a fantastic technology quarterly which shows off great ideas that might possibly hit the market in the near future, such as The creation and implementation of Digital Radio Modiale.

The Economist is win. I typically read that and the Globe And Mail for my conventional news output. The BBC is good of course, but lacks any kind of Canadian or local news (dur-hur, rly?).

Honestly my second largest news source is filtered news from people I trust online. I try to reciprocate.

The BBC is a bit too non-centric to hold my attention, but Google News will be awarded a quick glance if the day is running slow.

Aside from the aforementioned Economist/BBC/Google News, for important news I have a sort of ad-hoc system set up where I peruse an ever-changing list of lower-key political blogs on as many sides of the spectrum as I can find, and stick with them until I become convinced that all of their writers are just venting some personal grievance against The Other Side (which takes anywhere from a week to a couple of months). This helps me to remember not to form opinions too quickly or too broadly, by providing a haunting warning of what could happen to me if I do. When I encounter an ongoing story that I missed and want some background, I'll look it up on Wikinews - not because the reporting is especially good, but because the earlier related articles are always easier to find.

I read Ars Technica, Wired, and Gamasutra for the nerdier shit, and when The Onion runs satirical articles, rather than the usual farcical ones, it maintains its well-deserved reputation for insight. The rest of the Internet periodicals I read cannot rightly be called "news" so much as "link aggregation."

The only English-language news outlet I follow with any kind of regularity is Aswat al-Iraq, at least partly because I'm glad it exists at all. It's occasionally rather interesting too, if you happen to care about what happens in that part of the world.

I read Reuters directly, and watch the various BBC news programs on BBC America, which includes their American centric news, their British news, and their World News, as well as their magazine program, because the host is a vicious interviewer. I also watch Charlie Rose, depending on the guest.
