Good Obscure Genesis Games
« on: May 17, 2009, 12:38:31 PM »

One odd thing about the Genesis is that there are a fucking lot of really good games that have been more or less completely forgotten about.  I'm not even talking about stuff like Gunstar Heroes, which most people remember as being underrated.  I'm talking about the games nobody ever talks about that were actually damn good.  For some reason, whenever I get to thinking about these sorts of games, like 80%-90% of them were for the Genesis.  It's insane.

I'm sure I couldn't even remember all of them.  Let's start a list!

Ranger-X
World of Illusion
Sub-Terrania
Gain Ground
El Viento (and Earnest Evans?  I never played it.)
Vectorman
Comix Zone
Cool Spot
Landstalker (*cough*andlightcrusader*cough*)
Sparkster (and Rocket Knight Adventures to a much lesser extent)
Ristar

I know you could do about the same thing for any system but I swear to God the Genny has way more than any other.  I know the list goes on for, like, forever.  Help me out here.

That game was ridiculous and fun.

Alien soldier is almost completely ignored by everyone (probably due to the extreme difficulty)

it probably would have worked better on a system with more than 3 buttons on the controller.

Zero wing is actually pretty good (other than the infamously weird translation)

Hrrrn, that's weird.  I never remembered it being on the SNES, but apparently it's the same game and everything (unlike Sparkster, which was a completely different, terrible game on the SNES).

Speaking of which, Jurassic Park.

Alien soldier is almost completely ignored by everyone (probably due to the extreme difficulty)

And, you know, not actually being released in the US except for via Sega Channel.  I kept it and Pulseman off the list for that reason, and probably because everybody knows about both by now since I won't shut up about them.

I've never heard of half of those games, and I've only played maybe 3 (Comix Zone, Vectorman and Ristar). Though I have heard people singing praises of Landstalker.

The first thing I did when I viewed this thread was /pulseman to see if I'd been beaten to it.

I liked Light Crusader. You could buy things from a cat in exchange for fish.

Dogstar once recommended a game called Gleylancer.

This is my favorite shmup, just because the game actually gives you the option to continually fire without having to hold down the fire button. I think all shmups should do that. Because really, you're playing a shmup, is there any reason you would ever NOT want to be constantly firing?

My favorite obscure Genesis games are both ports of Amiga games published by Psygnosis: Puggsy and Wiz 'n Liz. The Sega CD version of Puggsy is a little better, although it doesn't have enough music.

Puggsy's a puzzle platformer whose main mechanic is the manipulation of dozens of objects in the world to solve the puzzles. It was pretty huge for its time, with tons of secret levels and minigames. Everyone should play it.

Wiz 'n Liz is a totally hyperactive arcade game that's sort of hard to describe. It really is one of the best games on the console, though. Just check it out.

I remember at least one SNES shmup had a mode that involved every enemy you destroy firing off a hail of bullets upon death, so that if you tried to blow up absolutely everything you'd eventually fuck yourself with an inescapable wall of gunfire.  I THINK it was Space Megaforce, I'm sure someone here can correct me on that though.

So is the lack of diagonal movement an emulator problem, or are you just dumb?
