I thought that I might be able to hold off on getting MQ, but reports of cake hats may make this impossible.

Some distant, fuzzy part of my memory seems to recall hearing that pizza is actually in the sandwich family of cuisine. I'm not quite sure why it would be, although it is a mishmash of random ingredients on bread, so maybe?

Thanks Doom.

I-I guess it might count as a kind of open-faced sandwich? Italian pizza might count, but Dominos' certainly does not. The toppings are baked with the bread, I'm pretty sure that'd disqualify it from my out of hand definition of a sandwich.

EDIT:
But if it's a debate about open-face, you should not invite Classic. He's not sure such half-assed sandwiches deserve that high and coveted status.

It's a pie.  The bottom is layered with a pastry and the fillings are layered on top and baked together, just like a cream pie or quiche.

Pizza Cake (in which I supposed the cheese, sauce, and toppings are mixed into the dough and baked) on the other hand is a traditional celebratory meal when one has accomplished something tremendously easy.

I had heard tell of a variety of pizza being made on-the-spot with a pre-baked crust and cold ingredients. This is what I meant when I referred to "Italian Pizza". Apparently, I meant Pizza Focaccia. The particular recipe I linked bakes the bread separate from its ingredients and after that, only uses heat to melt and darken cheese (arguably a variant on grilled cheese).

Regarding this... "Pizza Cake." Your ideas intrigue me and I would subscribe to your newsletter. :cake:

Huh. There was already a discussion on the topic of "is pizza a sandwich?" on metafilter. In the middle of that discussion, someone linked to a news article about a bakery in Massachusetts suing a Mexican restaurant, because they have exclusive rights to sell sandwiches at their mall, and... burritos are sandwiches? Of course they're not, and the court ruled as such, so in MA at least you can't call something a sandwich unless it's served between 2 pieces of bread. Which I guess discounts pizza as well. And open-faced sandwiches for that matter. That can't be right.

You're basically getting into terminology-defined-by-usage there, which is the sort of thing we actually have courts FOR.  So good on MA for making that call.

Beyond that you can call your food anything you want.  I mean a hamburger is technically a hamburger sandwich but who the fuck calls it that?

Blugh, fine. Either my memory is lying to me (wouldn't be the first time), or I'm remembering correctly and whoever said pizza is a sandwich was just plain wrong.

I thought this was a babble about video games not babble about sandwitches.

I'm mostly angry because it's past midnight and now I want a pizza.

Fuckers.

... Pizza cake? :cake:

But isn't a gyros a sandwich? That also only uses one piece of flatbread. I don't see how a burrito isn't a sandwich. It's just a sandwich made by/for foreign-types.

Though, looking at the case, it's pretty clear that Panera was trying to abuse its deal with the mall.

Pizza is pizza, chums.  If you've got to classify it it's a tart not a pie unless you're talking deep dish which I enjoy sometimes but wouldn't call pizza.

Speaking of pizza after midnight, I have a story!  Transcribed from #ff:

So I’m making a pizza and I need some stuff. Ride to the all hours supermarket, it’s not in the best part of town, we’ll say the night life is comprised of 90% bicycle and automobile theft and 10% old man in Tim Horton’s, so I bring the bike in with me. It’s 4 AM, who’s gonna be bothered? Get my crushed tomatoes, basil, those cheapo truffle shavings, artichokes, go to the cash. I hand over the money and the lady goes “next time you’ll have to leave your bike outside,” and she really seems to be staring me down over it. “I didn’t see a safe to stuff a bike in out there.” You have to bring your own lock, we don’t provide the locks. (??? did you not catch the sarcasm part of this) “Bike’s big, but it’s not as big and cumbersome as say a huge metal cage that you fill with groceries and push in front of you.” Yes but it’s against the rules, you have to leave it outside.

Man, old lady, if you hadn’t been an old lady I’d have made this an argument.

Come to think of it, they have pita sandwiches, and those are also just stuff wrapped in one big piece of pita bread. Then again, I don't consider those sandwiches so much as salad wraps (most pitas I've seen have an ungodly amount of lettuce).

Pointless Bike Argument

If it is a policy (always check), it probably is a blanket one that to get rid of all those bikes which have been traveling through the dirt and mud.  Groceries of all shapes and sizes tend to frown on devices with a rotating wheel capable of throwing filth around.

Fort carried the thing the entire time, though. He even got a permit to carry around that pair of guns.

On the contrary, most of them provide their own (which Fort even pointed out.)
