I've been watching Dexter lately. First season was good all around. Second season episode one has me worried; the victims are getting a little... goofy.

Dexter has stayed pretty consistently awesome through its entire run to date.  Don't worry about it.  It's never been about the individual victims.

That is essentially true; Dexter can carry the show through even the dumbest segments.

Bit odd that you complain about season 2, though. I'd like your opinion on season 3 if you care to write it. That's when show the show starts to diverge from the books.

This is a good thing because the books introduce a cult which means it sucks by definition (no really even the summary is stupid).

Also season 4 is starting soon, so good timing

Yeah I was gonna check out the books but then I heard that the books turned all lovecraftian and Dexter's "Dark Passenger" is exactly that, an eldritch entity that's piggybacking him and man that's not the lovable serial killer I enjoy.

I love how the show manages to make Dexter very sympathetic while keeping him completely unrelatable.  That's hard to do.

Finished Season 2. It was good, mostly. But damn, it had a lot of shit I didn't like. For example: Federal Agent Lundy. In a series with flawed characters who make mistakes on a regular basis, he stood out like a Golden Adonis. He always had the right answer, always knew exactly what the Bay Harbor Butcher was always thinking, and always knew exactly what to say to stop a conflict dead in its tracks. His one and only problem? He was a little insecure with himself because he was dating a young, beautiful woman.

Then, of course, there was that entire storyline at the beginning with LaGuerta and the replacement Lieutenant that didn't go anywhere, had no ramifications, and only served to retcon LaGuerta back into her old job. And cheapen her character a bit.

I liked Lila, though. She had a similar, nigh perfect build-up as Lundy; unlike Lundy, she had a glorious, flaming collapse. She also said "Pardon my tits".

I caught the preview pilot for a show called Archer that's gonna be starting in January.  It's still available via <REDACTED> but holy shit that thing is amazingly funny.  Possibly by virtue of being really really over-the-top.

Sons of Anarchy is fucking good.  Ron Perlman is a terrifying creature, like some distant ancestor of man, and I am surprised to see that Katey Sagal can be so chilling.

Sure, it has bad episodes. And Bruce Campbell's acting is kind of groan-worthy.

I'm liking Stargate Universe so far. They're focusing on a couple characters at a time and steering clear of Earth-shattering cataclysmic problems forcing everyone into military or political mode. It's kinda just people trying to work together to survive so far, which is a bit more interesting than seeing people with a clear objective doing the best job humanly possible every week.

After realizing that TV was back from the dead, I'm catching up on The Office.  This show is so brilliant.

I have no idea what is the correct thread for this, but: FYI, Hulu's going to become a pay subscription service at some point.

I mean, I can't see Hulu anyway, unless I bother with a proxy or something, so it's moot to my lazy ass (I might care if there was a current TV show I really wanted to watch badly, but then, I'd probably just buy the DVD series). But you guys might want to know.

Well, that's "Fox is thinking about charging for Hulu", but there's a bunch of other networks that run it with them.  Including NBC, who's had a lot of success offering full episodes for free on their own site.  So Fox might get shouted down here.

Yeah, as soon as they start charging a subscription fee, you're going to see an incredibly sharp decline in popularity. I do see their dilemma, though. Maybe if they did a one-time charge of a dollar for older shows and episodes.

Agree. Therein lies the 'free, unrestricted content' dilemma.

Watched the pilot for the V remake on Hulu.  It seems to be a teabagger's wetdream: Mysterious, seemingly friendly visitors show up preaching "hope" and "change" gain the devotion of everyone on the planet.  They even have a plan to provide universal health care!  And they corrupt the media, which is so obsessed with getting ahead they'll slavishly say whatever the visitors want.  It's even asserted that they're part of a secret cabal that has silently been manipulating societal events on Earth from behinds the scenes for years.  But, turns out they're really lizard people and only crazy, dumb idiots can stop them.  Seriously.

Aside from the obvious, cutting social criticism, the worst offense the show makes is just being outright dumb.  After killing an evil space reptile, the resistance then proceeds to leave the body behind, which would have probably been the fastest way to prove that the visitors are in fact a race of evil space reptiles.

You can criticize politics and society all you want, just don't be stupid about it.
