On the one hand, "Munsters Remake" is not a phrase that fills me with excitement or longing.

On the other hand, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa, Portia de Rossi as Lily, and the guy from Sliders as Herman are all really excellent casting choices.

It didn't get picked up for series but NBC aired the pilot as a Halloween special.  And it was enough to make me regret it didn't get picked up for series, because it was pretty damn funny.

In this case, swapping 1960's silliness for a modern, darker take actually worked really, really well.  The comedy is pleasingly dark -- the plot largely revolves around Grandpa trying to find someone he can kill so he can drink his blood and give Herman a new heart -- and every single line out of Izzard's mouth is pure gold.

All in all I thought it was pretty great.  Pity NBC strangled it in the crib (which would also make for a pretty hilarious episode), but not exactly unexpected.  It IS NBC.

...oh.  It's called Mockingbird Lane, if you want to go find yourself a copy.

Aw hell.  Well I sincerely hope the allegations are false -- Clash always seemed like a really great guy.  Everybody on Sesame Street always gave me the impression that they were exactly the sort of person you would expect them to be.

But the truth is more important than how I feel about Sesame Street.  May the truth come out, whatever it may be.

Speaking of stupid American TV: AMC is making a television series prequel to Psycho, set in modern day, about teenage Norman Bates.

It looks exactly as terrible as you'd expect.

Aw, I missed this earlier. While the constant reharvesting of any recognizable boomer-era brand makes my teeth itch, this was actually fucking good. Some of the narrative elements didn't quite gel and what ideally should have been a juxtaposition of the mundanely suburban/domestic and weird/supernatural is already really well traveled territory. Sometimes it came off as forced and schizophrenic. It was an excellent start, though, and I'd have fully expected the show's identity issues to work themselves out if it weren't DOA.

The only thing I actually fucking despised was the soundtrack. It's very easy to imagine a producer saying "People are retarded. They're not going to realize this is the Munsters. Beat them to death with the show's motif every fifteen seconds. Actually, better make it ten." The result is both distracting and insulting. If it only happened once or twice, and with even the slightest bit of subtlety, it would have actually been much more effective.

I gave 1313 Mockingbird Lane a watch the other day after finding out it was written by the guy who'd done Pushing Daisies. I really did not like it, but I liked a lot of individual things about it - good casting all around, the locations were nice, and it was really cute. As a show, though, it's just sort of tedious and scatterbrained and bland. Maybe it was just the pilot?

I also caught the first episode of Mr. Selfridge and ye fucking gods is that show unwatchable. Back in the day, I had roommates who unironically enjoyed Entourage, and the single thing in that show that did not make me weep for the folly of man was Jeremy Piven's insane Ari character. Basically, his sole characteristic was that he was really good at yelling at people and making fun of his gay assistant, so every one of his scenes was just him just screaming at one of the countless listless jackasses that populated that godawful show. It was like they'd intentionally made the most loathsome imaginable cast just so this character could run around yelling at them.

Mr. Selfridge has Jeremy Piven as a 1940's huckster in England, and sort of follows him around as he bullshits his way to having a successful store. Weirdly, he just kind of seems incredibly uncomfortable in the role and like... his character in the show is always acting, to trick people, so he acts as someone who's only kind of good at acting enthusiastic, which from where we're standing, is awful. So he does a shitty, awkward job of pretending to be someone poorly pretending to be someone beaming with confidence. I have no idea why I watched as much of it as I did before jumping ship.

Hollywood Reporter interviews John Oliver on his upcoming stint as host of Daily Show while Stewart's off directing a film.

It's a great interview; I love Oliver and I think he'll be a lot of fun.

But I do kinda hope they asked Bee first and she said no.

Under the Dome's off to a pretty decent start.  It's got a handful of interesting mysteries and characters with hooks.  I think I'll stick around.

So is next week's episode the one where Moe puts a traffic cone on his head and declares himself emperor?
