Supreme Court hearing FCC case.  Doesn't sound good; it's probably going to come down to Kennedy (though I'd say Thomas is a wildcard given his appreciation for porn).

WaPo: most UK ISP's ban the Wikipedia entry on the Scorpions' 1976 album Virgin Killer due to child nudity on its cover.

Most sites were carrying that as UK ISPS BAN WIKIPEDIA, which is a much bigger deal than "UK ISPs ban a page of wikipedia for some album"

Which may be justified, depending on how you look at things like that.

It's more that Wikipedia banned UK ISPs, because they're using a proxy to block the Virgin Killer article, and thus a large portion of the UK is using the same IP as far as Wikipedia is concerned. And since that IP is one that has banned, it has the net effect of blocking them all from editing Wikipedia.

Even at a young age, the Virgin Killer fought for world peace

I'm not following.  Wikipedia banned the IP, not vice-versa?  Do you have a source on that?

Anyway, per PC World, it appears the block has been reversed.

Article regarding the incident.

Quote
"Wikipedia has been added to a Internet Watch Foundation UK website blacklist, and your Internet service provider has decided to block part of your access. Unfortunately, this also makes it impossible for us to differentiate between different users, and block those abusing the site without blocking other innocent people as well."

Hm, odd.  Seems like they could have just locked the article.  Unless there was mass vandalism to a BUNCH of articles.

From what I can tell, it wasn't about the offending page itself, but a consequence of traffic headed toward the entirety of Wikipedia being routed through the proxy.

The same thing happened to 4chan a while back. BT Internet users found themselves directed to the banned page, but got a report that there was no ban on file for their IP. Without an IP on file to rescind the ban, the admins had to tell BT users they were out of luck.

Does BT hold a monopoly for broadband internet in certain parts of the UK?

Not that I'm aware. You may be limited to using BT's phone lines for ADSL, but that doesn't tie you to their ISP. Not everybody realises this, and they also make it difficult for you to transfer away.

I recently switched from BT to another supplier after my DSL went down and tech support refused to concede for a week that it was a fault on their end. First they called up to offer a discount for staying, which still wasn't cheaper than the new ISP. Next they sent out a letter warning that my service would be disconnected, implying that this included my phone service. When I did switch, they continued to bill me until I had my bank cancel the direct debit payment, after which they wanted to know why I hadn't paid my bill.

This is the same ISP that once booted me off their unlimited dialup for using too many hours. They later withdrew the "unlimited" claim after one of two lawsuits over false advertising; the second suit forced them to withdraw the claims that their service was "fast" and "reliable", when it was concluded to be neither.

ACLU & EFF defeat COPA, by means of the USSC.

And it ended in beautiful irony.

Maybe someday they'll meet and have some kind of THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE battle.

Charges against Ryan Matheson dropped.  He's the guy who's spent the past 2 years of his life in legal hell after being stopped by Canadian customs and accused of having kiddie porn on his laptop.  (It was manga, and, not that it should matter, per CBR it wasn't even loli, it was a not-very-explicit moe parody of The 48 Positions.)

So be careful what's on your laptop when you cross the border, and donate to CBLDF.
