Right, but those revelations are coming through a human brain. I'd wager dollars to donuts that that wrinkly lump of meat has more to do with it than an alien computer made out of pure time. And just as well, too, since a human brain has a lot more invested in what humans get up to. I can get behind the idea of god as some kind of a memetic construct that could exert some very real power within the context of human cognition and social interaction. I mean depending on your views about subjective vs. consensus reality and the nature of consciousness and how recently you watched Serial Experiments Lain you could probably have a pretty interesting discussion. It's just this kind of "could we recognise the Lord if we crashed a spaceship into Him" talk that is... really silly.

I would venture to say that the "alien and unknowable" thing should not be referred to as "God," as it is probably not the same person-like god of the big 3 big popular monotheistic religions.

A funny thing about discussing God is using one word to refer to rather dissimilar things.

Well "God" usually refers to a monotheistic creator god, hence it is capitalized as it's a proper noun, while god is the catch all term for any kind of god you might care to have. I would say that the god of the Abrahamic religions isn't particularly person-like at all. I mean he talks to some people in the old testament, but looking at it will kill you in the old testament and he's referred to as having a body unlike man, so yeah. If it created the universe and has a will then it can probably fit into the Abrahamic defintion of good, the real question is whether an alien and strange god can ever be good in a way that means anything to us.

Remember: An unknowable, uncomprehendable god still cares where you stick your penis.

I overheard Lexi watching For the Bible Tells Me So the other day on Youtube. I was mostly busy playing WoW and being depressed, but I still caught some bits that made me chuckle audibly. Something about how in Leviticus, home of the famous Leviticus 18 that literally says it's okay to crack someone's skull in half because he said you had a cute male butt, also brands other hideous acts as "abominations." Some mentioned examples include:

-Eating a rabbit
-Planting two types of crops in the same field/commingling of crops
-Wearing linen and wool at the same time
-Eating a shrimp

I've always heard that you can basically open a bible to any page and point out the flaws, but I didn't think it was so easy to condemn the greater part of the South to steamy, homoerotic damnation. Maybe I should go buy one...

It wasn't a problem of wearing linen and wool garments at the same time, it was blended fibers.  So that cotton/polyester blend you have (and I know you have one) is a straight up ticket to hell.

I had heard somewhere that Eating Shrimp was more or less due to, at the time, having no way to make them fully safe to eat...but blended fibers? Where'd that come from.

Same with pork, I'm sure.  I think the blended fiber thing got slipped in by a textiles concern.

You couldn't wash clothes made of blended fibers because they would shrink at different rates and tear or something.

And yeah, forcing an evangelical Christian to read straight through Leviticus is a pretty great way to put them off of literal interpretation of the bible. Also a bonus since almost all of the anti-gay stuff they quote from the bible is in Leviticus.

West Wing pointed out the best one - touching a dead pig's skin.

That's right, football is a deadly sin.

(Yes we all know they're not actually made from that, shush.)

It's in the New Testament too (although Jesus himself has nothing to say on the topic):

Quote from: 1 Corinthians 9-10
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Got this google ad while searching for the passage:

:pop: So... how did this clearly delusional person pass psychological exams?

Her entire line of thought for both the crime and during the trial is
Quote
God is my personal man-servant, who shall do everything for me.

Well, have fun in jail, as God obviously wants you there.
