I've been reading through the Achewood archives again.

Know what?

The single best piece of advice I have EVER HEARD was written in the margins of a check by a cartoon cat.

Late response, but, yeah, I agree. Can you do an artichoke dish for mom is great advice.

Edit: Huh, reply #666.

Whatever, all of those are no different than those Buddha statues they have in Nepal and Thailand and all those places.

Actually, that one in Rio is probably one of my favourite landmarks in the world other than the fact that any time something is filmed in Rio it has to be shown from a helicopter for 5 seconds.

Zed: They could make it part of Blanka's stage maybe?

Oh, you worthless pagans. Giant Jesus statue should be a Super Smash Bros. stage hazard before it should be anything else.

...That's... Uh... What I learned today. Uh-huh.

I understand the giant Buddha statues, which not only are from a culture that has no beef with idolatry, but also do not worship Buddha as a god, instead as a respected enlightened figure.

But I just can never understand how Christians can justify these things.  If a giant statue of a figure the builder believes to be god (or the son of god in this case, who is for some reason given more worship than god) isn't a idol, I have no idea what is.

A giant symbol of a torture device is more arguable. But still, having the 10 commandments right there...  (Hell, even if you know think the 10 commandments are only specifically for jews, it's forbidden by the Noahide laws which are for gentiles aswell.)

Erm. Preeeetty sure that consistent Christians aren't going to bow down and worship the statue of a cross, the Ten Commandments, or Jesus. That's the actual point and practice of idolatry. So it doesn't bother me too much, as a practicing Christian who fancies himself as rather consistent.

Well, sometimes you see people (mainly Catholic I suppose, but that's the group I think of first because I used to be part of it) kissing the feet or hands of statues of saints, and that makes me... well. I wouldn't get up in anybody's grill over it, but I wouldn't do it either. I'm not smart enough to know where the line between admiration and worship is, but I know there is such a line, and I trust people to know on which side of it they want to stand.

I am not Catholic. I am not in a rush to defend Catholic belief as concerns the "communion of saints."

Jesus knows if one is worshipping someone or something rather than the Creator. That is for God to ultimately condemn, not I. As it is, I would rather make it obvious that I worship the Creator, and not the created.

Maybe the kissy-kissy isn't actually worship. I would say that, oh, sacrificing the wee ones to Moloch is not a gray area, however.

...Is anyone actually learning anything yet?

My favorite thing about the graven images law is that God completely owns up to committing the sin of Envy when he lays that one down (and it is, in fact, the very first one).  Then he immediately follows up with "oh, and I will fuck over the next four generations of anybody who tries to call me out on it."

God's a pretty neat guy sometimes, if you can respect a humongous omnipotent prick.

First off the ten commandments shouldn't really be that important to anyone. To the jews they're just 10 of the laws, and Jesus sums the whole thing up in one or two laws. Secondly, while I'm sure this is lost on many Christians, the justification for statues, icons, and the like is that you clearly aren't worshiping the thing it's self, but rather the being that the statue symbolizes. The protestants really went ape shit on Christian art with the justification that it was all idolatry, so there are opposing view points. The place of saints varies a lot between the different denominations, but it seems to be pretty universal that you don't worship saints, you ask them for help of one sort or another.

What a refreshing thought that is in no way a stale, old canard.

HELLO RICHARD DAWKINS
:advice:
GIVE BRENTAI HIS ACCOUNT BACK

If God exists, and is the source of morality, it follows that we cannot be more moral than He. He is the Creator and Judge. We are the created. If our worship and love belongs rightly to God, and He decrees that it does, it is not just when it goes towards the creation.

I mean, listen to yourself. Sin? What? Who is God sinning against, exactly? Previous flippancy aside, please enlighten me.

First off the ten commandments shouldn't really be that important to anyone.

Yes, because they were written, like, a really, really long time ago, and the ancients wur dum.

...I know what you're getting at with the rest of your post, Kashan, but please don't discount the Law and the prophets. I just couldn't resist, friend.
