Man, so the next volume of Blade of the Immortal came out.

Fuck are we finally getting out of the dungeon? Is the plot ACTUALLY ADVANCING?! About fucking time... If this storyline goes on any longer the series is going to turn into Dragonball fucking Z.

<-- is still pissed about BotI getting cancelled in individual-issue format.

...Blade of the Immortal is STILL RUNNING?  Like, in Japan?

Are they trying to compete with Berserk or something?

I don't know if it's still running in Japan, or if the run has completed over there, but volume 20 was the most recent English release.

I need to catch up on my One Piece. Love the whackiness. I read most of the Foxie arc then just sort of quit... to the Mangamobile!

Decide I can live without shonen manga and use the old issues for kindling?
I dunno if you reached a decision on this last month and all but for god's sake offer to sell them to one of us first you heartless brit.

I'm open to offers, but the postage would be exorbitant. It's fifteen kilos or 33lbs of books, measuring about one cubic foot, and costing something like $120 to post internationally.

Good stuff: It's roughly equivalent to ten volumes each of Hikaru no Go, Yuyu Hakushou, Naruto, One Piece, Yugioh, Dragonball Z and Shaman King. Advantage is that to buy all this in graphic novel format would set you back $556.50, and this is in large format with bonus guff like interviews with the authors. It's also got series like Yugioh that are entertaining early on, but you wouldn't buy them separately. Paper manga is straightforwardly superior, and these back issues are now hard to come by.

Bad stuff: I'm missing five issues from 2003-2005, and most issues after that. All series are available in scanlations, which are freely available and better up to date. If you only want two series it's better value to buy the individual volumes from Amazon, even if I only sold them for a dollar plus shipping each; for three, still better value if I sold at $3 each.

I think Bill Watterson once remarked that he wanted to see a comic written from a little girl's perspective.

Yotsuba&! is that comic.

You know, I'm not sure. I've been reading it for over a year, and it is right up your alley. Also, Franken Fran is hilarious.

I love AIKI. It's well drawn, I like the characters. It's like Tenjou Tenge, only infinitely less retarded, and plus I can actually understand what's going on.

That being said, on the credits page? Every name beneath the translator's name needs to get curb-stomped, badly. Seriously, "The Fingers of your Feet"?

Price of freedom, indeed.

Aiki and Franken Fran are both recent guilty pleasures for me as well.

Agreed on it actually being less retarded than Tenjo Tenge.  The exposition SECRET TECHNIQUE METHODS crap veers close to the overbearing prattle you find in other manga but somehow always manages to pull back at the last second.  For the most part, nobody is stupid enough to STOP during a fight just to talk; it's all either in quieter moments, or they're still actually fighting while talking.

The latest Naruto implies that they're going to work through serious, big kid issues. Looking forward to when they disappoint and decide to solve the problem with friendship, teamwork, and kiai/ganbare.

Are you kidding, female characters never do anything ever in naruto.

hell, this is nearly the first time NARUTO HIMSELF has done anything of note.

(Honestly the whole blowing up the village thing smells of "IM KILLING CHARACTERS OFF SO I DONT GET ANY MORE LETTERS ASKING WHY THEY NEVER APPEAR")

Also the art just seems to get worse and worse.

Naruto is aggressively sexist. It's astounding.

the first time NARUTO HIMSELF has done anything of note

Naruto has been doing stuff "of note" since before the time skip. He just also exists in a world where people have wildly disparate ability with magic. There'd be nowhere to go if it wasn't clear at every step of the way that there are people scarier than the main character hanging around, right?

Yes, but it's not that there's a lack of scary people.  It's that Naruto's allies are infinitely more useful than him.

Well, except for the girls. :nyoro~n:

At the same time though, Naruto makes a point of being useful about once an arc. Sometimes more than that. He's not an entirely useless lump. It's just his job to be so retarded that the writer has an excuse to explain everything to the thick 8 year olds reading it.

Naruto's allies are infinitely more useful than him.

Well, not anymore. After three years of hard training with one of the greatest ninjas ever, more hard training with another world-famous ninja, and even more hard training with the first greatest ninja's own teacher, Naruto is finally ready to show everyone what's he's made of!

Oh. Oh dear.

Nevermind.

Shonen manga seems to be fantastically sexist. Near the beginning of Naruto, Kakashi notices that while Sakura's technique is well-practiced, she's doomed to fall behind Naruto and Sasuke during adolescence because women are just weaker.

Then there's the kendo girl in One Piece, who dies abruptly after falling down the stairs. Zolo can't believe that such a strong fighter could be killed so easily, but the girl's father explains that girls are simply weaker than boys.
