I am glad to see that they've retained Prime's behind-the-visor camera for the first person segments, which I still think was a brilliant concept. Putting the player inside a claustrophobic space suit is a perfect way to justify the sort of tunnel vision effect you get with that perspective. I'm surprised more games haven't ripped it off.

It's not surprising that the series is getting more and more wordy.  You can only play the 'SPACE IS EMPTY EXCEPT FOR YOOOOOOOOOOOOOU' angle for so long.

I, for one, welcome our new vocal overlords.

Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. All humans fear change, and I'm no exception. I am of the opinion that Samus was better before I knew her gender or race, let alone that she had a personality.

I realize that I'm probably in the minority on this one.

I just thought I'd come along and say that every attempt to build Samus' character is great and reading that origin manga was VIP-Quality.

The actual scene where it imprints on her is one of the more nuanced video game scenes of that era. She raises her gun to blast it, visibly hesitates as it chirps innocently, and then puts down her gun and takes off with it. I think the intent was pretty clear, considering the limitations of the medium.

And I'm one of the ones who PREFERS that type of storytelling in a Metroid game.  I don't WANT a fucking narration; it's both a series and a style of game that is better served by showing than telling.

(One of my favorite moments in the Sonic series is where, following the fight with Knuckles, Robotnik swoops in and takes the Master Emerald.  Knuckles tries to stop him and gets zapped.  After Robotnik takes off, Knuckles stands there for a minute, clearly considering his options, and finally turns to Sonic, beckons, and punches through a wall to lead him out of the Palace.)

Hmm.  Thinking of a wordless Metroid game that still uses full (but brief) cutscenes here and there to tell a story, like in Smash Bros. Brawl.

I like a mix, but then I'm the kinda guy who loves expanded worlds and ridiculous in-depth(but hopefully optional) exploration of a series. The dictionary in Mass Effect is a great example.

Like in Metroid Prime 2 where the marines are there, but just to get crushed by rocks and shit in the intro before it becomes a Metroid game. But you can still scan things to your heart's content, so I was happy enough(as happy as a fella can be playing Metroid Prime 2, ffffuck you mcguffin sequence.) But you know it still kinda sucks that the marines literally exist just to be crushed by a rock as scenery.

I didn't really care either way with a narration like Fusion or a re-imagining like Zero Mission.

And I've barely played 3, which as I recall was knee-deep in extreme characterization(thankfully, just of everything in the Galaxy BUT Samus) before you even finished the intro.

I dunno it wouldn't hurt to give it a try and Team Ninja seems to know how to make fun games, sex-doll jokes aside.

EDIT: Rereading that I guess I don't mind if they go Fusion on us and give us a story with some words, but hopefully it can be a fan-obsess-your-own-adventure deal like Prime's scanners were.

Eh, no matter what they do, some vocal group is going to hate the shit out of it anyway.

If Metroid Prime 3 is to be taken as canon - which it probably won't be! - then Mother Brain is just an Aurora Unit with a female personality. It is said that the AUs can be given male, female, or gender-neutral personalities.

Now, I would like to learn more about the whole Metroid Queen thing. Fusion's manual said that the Chozo created the Metroids to kill the X Parasites, and although that's a retcon, I'd like to know why they would create a horrible, life-sucking, requires-subzero-temperatures-and-then-five-powerful-missles-to-kill creatures and allow them to metamorphose into more powerful adult forms.

Last I heard, Prime 3 is canon, but Word of God says Mother Brain is not an Aurora. The remaining possibility is that Auroras are based on her.

And if you accept the manga as canon, metroids are so scary because Mother Brain was in charge of designing them, and was working with the Space Pirates all along to create bioweapons. Implicitly because they were the highest bidder.

New gameplay trailer.

It actually looks... fun.  Get rid of the cutscene bullshit, and it looks like Super Metroid and Metroid Prime had a baby, and that is kinda the holy grail of everything.

I will remain cautiously optimistic.

Well, it's just a 2d platformer, isn't it? Reminds me of Shadow Complex, which is very nice indeed.

The one worrying part is the more open 3D room, where it looks like you'll have to stop and aim to turn.  The apparent lack of the ability to strafe is also a little worrying.

But other than that, it looks totally awesome.  I'm guessing that you tilt to aim at diagonals, which sounds kinda intuitive/kinda stupid and will require playing to see how it feels.

I hope there's the option to use the classic controller.
