The areas are 3D but you move through them in 2D. Along a plane, as it were. You can't change direction. You can go left or right. It's just that some situations require you to aim missiles manually, which has to be done in first-person while stationary.

Oh, so it's not like, say, Bionic Commando Rearmed?

It's more like Shadow Complex, except the layout of the environment is in 3D instead of just being a series of rooms along a single plane.

I was talking about a specific part of the trailer, in a specific room.  At about 1:06, there's a jungle-like room, and first Samus is running in one invisible 2d path, then it goes first person, turns and targets an object, then Samus is running on what appears to be a different invisible 2d path.

Maybe it does some clever things with navigation, but I don't believe that segment to be representative of the bulk of traversal.

I don't know, it seems like there was multiple parts in the trailer where you move in 3 dimensions in a sort of MGS1 sort of way.

Metroid Other M Trailer - E3 2010

Everyone was pretty apprehensive after that initial trailer last year with CUTSCENES and "REMEMBER ME?", but I'm feeling a lot better after seeing these past two trailers.  It's like they understand what Metroid is supposed to be, and that makes me happy.

You know, now that I think about it more, Other M is reminding me of Killer 7. They are both in 3D environments, but the movement in both are on rails. The on rails part is why I hated playing Killer 7, so I am starting to worry about it. Other M looks like it plays like a fun videogame, but the only way to know is to actually play it.

One of the reasons I didn't like Killer 7 was because you could only move on set paths which you could only move in two directions. It looks like Other M does the same thing.

It doesn't really look like that, though, except for the parts which deliberately have a 2.5D perspective.

It is hard to tell from what we have seen so far. I was assuming the entire game would be in a 2.5d style where you could look and aim in 3D.

I get the feeling that aim mode is something you can't really move around in and as such kind of sucks a D

So you're saying they finally... Remember Metroid?

It appears, based on videos, that there are some areas where you move around in three dimensions and some areas where you're just in two, and it transitions smoothly between them, somewhat a la Mario Galaxy.

The movement in the video Catloaf posted looks a bit too much like movement in the Lego Star Wars games. Except maybe not quite as awful.
