that's because it was silly and not very console-ish, not because it gave you brain cancer.

... i hope, because i don't know how the DS would cause you pain, aside from hand cramps.

Gabe Newell has gigantic, clanking brass balls

Gabe Newell stellt IPT für Steam auf der Cebit 2011 vor

For some background, this is a fairly potent demonstration of a new, optional, security tool coming to Steam that allows Steam to take advantage of a feature of the new Sandy Bridge generation of the Core series that lets you key your Steam account to a specific computer, supposedly infallibly. I imagine it has to do with the fact that processors are significantly more unique than fingerprints. This does remove the ability to use Steam's ability to play your games on any computer, but because it's completely optional that's not really a problem, just a judgement call. Personally, I don't play my games on more than one PC, so I might think of taking advantage of this, since my Steam account runs into the thousands of dollars at this point, whereas if I were more on the move, and had, say, a gaming laptop I took with me places, I might not.

What's their backup if your computer crashes and burns?

Probably the same thing as if you lose your account now. You call in and retrieve your account.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifelock

Quote
In May 2010 the Phoenix New Times reported that LifeLock CEO Todd Davis has been a victim of identity theft at least 13 times since 2007, which is 12 more times than has previously been known.

Okay so maybe Steam's new security is awesome and all, but that was kinda dumb of Newell.

Intel IPT isn't really hackable in the same way. Steam's service literally binds your account to the unique signature of your CPU. The only way to crack it would be to actually gain direct access to the code that the Sandy Bridge CPUs spit out that allow for this to happen.

Plus, while Gabe would certainly have some big problems if his Steam account really was compromised, such problems pale in comparison to the one's he'd have if his SIN, driver's license, etc. were out there.

So is this brilliant plan defeated by purchasing an Athlon processor or what?

More likely it's public-key encryption, so even if you've got the code, it's useless without the private key.

(Who was the guy who kept making bizarre claims that if Steam respect first sale doctrine Newell's account would immediately get hacked?  JDigital?)

No idea. That thread was bad, and I thought we agreed never to speak of it again.

Not quite re: the protection thing.

You can still play your Steam Games on any computer, but you can only modify your account settings on that one computer.

You can't use it if you don't have a sufficiently new Intel CPU.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is coming out in August. A game that was supposed to be out by now is getting pushed back 5 months because of how bad FF14 is. There is no fuck big enough to express how I feel.

Also it's going to be interesting to see how sales get effected by this. Pretty much every media outlet has released everything they can by now because it was supposed to be out. Now there will be a long stretch of silence until the game comes out.

Croteam and Devolver today jointly announced the Serious Sam Indie Series, three stand-alone games allowing independent developers to offer their own takes on the first-person shooter series.

(...)

The indie teams participating include Mommy's Best Games (Grapple Buggy and Weapon of Choice), Be-Rad Entertainment (Lame Castle), and Vlambeer (Super Crate Box, Radical Fishing). Mommy's Best Games will be making Serious Sam: Double D, a side-scrolling two-dimensional shooter for PCs and consoles. Be-Rad will continue to explore the auto-running genre of mobile phone games with Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack!, which has players guide one of the series' ever-sprinting headless, bomb-handed grunts to his appointed target by dodging obstacles.

Finally, Vlambeer is adapting Sam into a "seriously frantic" turn-based role-playing game with Serious Sam: The Random Encounter. The game will feature fast-paced fights pitting Sam and his party against hordes of Mental's minions.

I don't even know what to say about that last one. I'm curious, definitely, but... :wat:

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has the scoop as well. Nothing more than a screenshot, though.
