Why did that remind me of Legend of Mana?

Optional things that don't involve me at all do not effect my enjoyment of the game. Still a better economy that one based on SoJs.

Also, you have to be connected to their servers to play, even in single-player.

Same for StarCraft 2. Not exactly excited about it, but that part isn't news. Battle.net 2.0 is just like that, and all future projects will be on the framework. They've made no bones about that fact.

This feels like they're legalizing marijuana. "We don't like that this is going on, but we know it's gonna be going on anyway, so we might as well regulate and tax it ourselves."

Personally, I just hope the Item Drop stat has been removed completely to prevent farming characters from cropping up.

Diablo III isn't an MMO, right?  People could just hack all the best equipment into their inventories and sell it for top dollar.

Which is why you need the always-on Internet connection: your game is saved on their servers, not your own computer.

They're basically running the back end of the game as if it is an MMO, which is fine by me given Diablo's history. Personally, while the whole rest of everyone is freaking out, I see this as the strongest move yet in the battle against a real problem in gaming (as opposed to piracy), which is gold farming. Blizzard is simply recognizing that people will find a way to pay money for items, and owning it. They've just taken the market away from those guys and put it in their hands and the hands of the players.

I really don't view any of this as being a DRM issue any more than having to be signed in to play WoW is a DRM issue. That's just the kind of game they're making. The online kind.

They are going to have to pump up their security even more now that real money is involved though. Not having an authenticator is inexcusable when someone could conceivably raid your Diablo bank for real money.

This is all fine and good for pubbies but maybe I just wanna play the game by myself or with a few trusted friends and not have to worry about what happens when someone at Cox spills his coffee?  I really don't need the almighty cloud to protect me from people I know running around screaming about free gold.  I have the almighty quit button for that.

Well, tough shit, I guess. They had to choose between security (and I'm referring to Diablo's rich history of hacking here) and the ability to play however you want. I respect their decision. Just think of it like Guild Wars, because that's basically how it will work.

Tough shit nothing.  There's a completely simple solution of allowing you to create your character as either a offine/ad-hoc only or a Battle.net character.  See?  Battle.net play is still secure, and nobody has to wait for the inevitable offline/ad-hoc pirate version.

If Blizzard doesn't at least try to implement this then they're clearly not doing this for the reasons they say they're doing this.  Do you accept this behavior?

Wow. Seeing the BTAS version in the game is probably going to be jarring.
