Seeing that trailer, the first thought I had was "forget Kilik or Siggy or whoever is heading that roster by now*, Ezio is officially the main character of this series". They should just call it Assassin's Creed: Soul Calibur.

*: i dunno, i never played 4

EDIT: RETCON NIGHTMARE INTO A TEMPLAR. DO IT, NAMCO, YOU KNOW IT FEELS RIGHT. THE SWORDS ARE PIECES OF EEEEEEEDEEEEEEEENNNNNNN

Did you mean Gamespy? Because Gamespy is offering free codes if you log in.

Also: Rockstar has announce GTA Five V.

Edit: Maybe you typo'd Gamespot, because supposedly they are also giving out keys.

So some intrepid soul leaked the first twenty minutes or so of Skyrim gameplay on video. Linking is pointless, since all videos get taken down within a few hours.

It looks... okay. Textures seem too shiny, combat a little too stiff. I'd play it, but I wouldn't buy it. Not for a while, anyway.

combat a little too stiff.

For an Elder Scrolls game? I mean, for a game with a history of fluid, visceral combat this is most definitely a shock. Quite a shock indeed.

I'm sure this will deter the many fans of the series because it is such a divergence from the amazing combat gameplay from the games of previous years. Especially Morrowind. That was the pinnacle of smooth, meaningful combat.

Honestly, the only reason I like oblivion better than morrowind is because of the combat.

I thought all the combat in elder scrolls game was super stiff. In oblivion it always seemed clunky, especially when you had more than one person attacking you. First person doesn't really work so well for melee combat. That's why I just liked lobbing fireballs or arrows at stuff.

Only game I've played where first-person melee felt in any way right was Dead Island.  And I think they cheat a bit by making the effective range larger than it should be.

Dark Messiah had good melee combat. Maken X's was alright, if a little floaty.

For some reason I never minded the melee combat in Team Fortress 2, but other than that and Dead Island first person melee is terribad.

Playing Brick in Borderlands is fun, but that's more in spite of the bad melee combat, rather than because of it.

Zeno Clash is pretty great, though!

TF2 and Borderlands cheat because the melee is simple and one-sided; if you're in melee range, you're doing damage, the end.

Dead Island seems to be a little more refined but for the most part you're just up against slow as shit dumb fucking zombies.

If you ask me, if you want to do effective melee combat in first-person 3D, then look at the elements of effective combat in third-person 3D.  Most of them still apply.

So Devil May Cry, God of War, Bayonetta and ok sometimes Dynasty Warriors all employ a couple common tricks to make the 3D foightin' work:

* The range of the weapon is always a bit longer than the actual weapon.  In GoW this is obvious; Bayonetta has little effect splashes that increase her range; the DW series gives everyone little wind slices as an actual stat, and DMC just kind of tells you to accept it.
* Basic movement stuff: a block, a dodge, and some form of dash move to close the gap.
* Easy 2-3 button combinations.  None of this fancy/useless directional attack shit.  The player needs to be in control of his/her attack while at the same time not really thinking about it.
* Targeting and auto-targeting.
* Something to do BESIDES just basic attacking.  The Devil Mode/Musou/QTE stuff breaks up a fight that would otherwise just be MASH BUTAN.
* Enemies all have readable attacks.
* Enemies don't clock you in the back of the head from offscreen, or if they do, there's a reasonable way to either tell they're going to or oherwise prevent them from doing so.

...wow, that was a longer list than I thought.  There's probably a lot more in there, too.

Anyway, I think if people took their cues from DMC for first-person combat instead of trying to ape some weirdly mechanical system like a wrestling game, it'd suddenly turn out to be a perfectly viable and quite fun little subgenre.

Elder Scrolls V Skyrim: Official Gameplay Trailer

Quote
I showed this trailer to my little brother one day. He loved it. Later that night, there was a huge thunderstorm. My little brother was scared, so I told him that all the thunder/lightning was from the Dovhkiin fighting dragons in the sky. He spent 15 minutes cheering for the 'Skyrim guy' before falling soundly asleep.

You could also make the actual melee combat more methodical and turn-based. See VATS- actually VATS is kind of retarded. See Vagrant Story's system. Actually neither is very good for what I'm trying to talk about, I just wanted to namedrop Vagrant Story.

The idea is that movement should never be tied 1:1 with the controls for your attack options. i.e., if I want to do the Ranger Takedown, I shouldn't have to be retreating from an enemy to do it. If you must use the same input scheme for both, make sure that a player can do something to make their movement or attacks not be across purposes, like a pause-to-attack scheme.

I think that one of the biggest strengths of 3rd person melee brawlers that 1st person games need to use more is a more reliable turn-to-face attacker scheme. Being surrounded oblivion is worse than being surrounded in reality, because it's (sometimes) impossible to assume a point of view that lets you observe both attackers at once.

I feel like I've played first person games that let you make fast facing changes toward the direction of motion by pressing a button, but I don't remember what they were. It's probably also a useful tool to making 1st person view viable.

Mount and Blade uses directional attacks just like oblivion and it works pretty well on it. The problem is that oblivion is easy enough that being surrounded in all sides is not really that big a deal even if your controls are clunky.

Mount and Blade is third person, though.

Also I dunno I found it nearly impossible to hit someone from horseback.
