Oh hey, Mount Arreat's a ruins now.  Is there some sort of trope named for the habit of any town you go to great lengths to save ending up destroyed in the interim time before the next sequel?

Is that really "In the interim time"?  I mean, Harrogath wasn't immediately nuked and incinerated by you, but Mt. Arreat did kind of explode.

sounds like they're doing an optional services thing rather than a subscription fee.

I don't remember Arreat exploding... although now that I come to think of it, the game sort of ended with the universe exploding.  So nevermind!

"We are going to monetize features so that we get to make them," said Wilson. "We kind of have to."

I can respect that.  When you've got a small budget like that and probably won't sell that many copies of the game, and will have to bring down the price to make it accessible... you know, you just do what you gotta do.

despite the fact that he and many other designers got their start in modding, the team takes a strong stance on the hacking of their games.

Hypocat is a hypocriiiiiiiiiite.

I do respect Blizzard enough to keep the monetization to fluff, though, so I'm not as angry as I sound.  I'm not angry.  I'm just very, very disappointed.

To be fair, they're kinda stuck in a perspective problem.  Best case scenario, Diablo III sells like hotcakes, barely matching the profits of one month of WoW subscriptions.

To be fair, they're kinda stuck in a perspective problem.  Best case scenario, Diablo III lets everyone buy six new houses barely matching the ten houses of one month of WoW subscriptions.

Well, that's fine.  Diablo devs have one house to go before they're officially elitists.

With Battle.net we're definitely looking at possible different features that we might be able to do for additional money. We're not talking about Hellgate or anything like that. We're not going to tack things on. I think World of Warcraft is a great example to look at. We charge people if they want to switch servers or if they want name changes, things that aren't core to the game experience, they're really just optional things that some people want. It takes us some development work to do it, so it makes sense to charge for it. We would never do something like say to get the full game experience, you'll have to pay extra.

So my copy of Gears of War 2 from Amazon comes with the freaking lancer rifle.  A full size prop.  I think it's an awesome, if nerdy thing.  Best Buy will let you get an RC Chimera tank.  That's pretty nifty.  Surely nothing could beat those options.  Oh, wait, WAIT.  What the fuck is this?  A GOLD RIFLE?  Damn you UK!

Wouldn't a gold rifle weigh hundreds of pounds and sound terrible?

No decisions made on the financial model. Blizzard is leaning toward not charging a subscription for Battle.net, but some features will be monetized.

A bit misleading here, due to the announcement itself being misleading.  Later interviews with (I believe) Jay Wilson have him calling the idea pay-to-play battle.net "evil" and saying definitively "We are not considering a subscription fee to play Diablo 3, it's not an MMO"

Not that that's slowed down the PSO franchise.

It stopped me and some others from buying PSU, but I guess they made the loss of box sales up and then some off of subscription fees.  Fuckers.

The greatest thing from blizzcon was rob pardo wearing a diablo III shirt with my little ponies and smiling rainbow clouds. If they don't sell that shirt I am going to be mad.
