Nope! A mine shaft ran under my house. Apparently gold and diamonds line the walls of mineshafts.
A lot easier to get diamond now.

Yeah, I'm in the process of clearing out this massive monstrosity of a mine beneath my 1.8 base that I'm currently working to build a sky-rail back to my 1.7 land.

It actually looks pretty badass, as it looks like there was a massive earthquake which destroyed the mine.  The main cavern is an underground ravine that has abandoned mine-pieces floating around in it.  I intend to pick this place clean.  I've already murdered four spider spawners.

I'd love to locate a stronghold or a village at some point, but the abandoned mine just gives this incredible self-sufficiency that hasn't been possible in Minecraft up until now.  You could stay underground for days in-game and still have enough supplies to keep going.  Between eating rotten meat from zombies (which is actually healthy, to my surprise), random bread in chests (how gross is that?), to all the wooden planks that you can turn in to torches and tools.

'Nother bug. Placing torches underwater. Place them and the torches pop off, but the light they shed stays. I used this to light up the lake in front of my new house. Using torches for air and light meant I was underwater for a good ten minutes in bright light.

EDIT: And good god. Where did all the squid go? I am actively squid hunting and found one squid. I need at least 3 more for my plans.

EDIT2: Ok. Found some. Anyone else notice anything odd with squid? For each swing on them, I get an ink sac. They die in one or two hits (depending on crits, I guess) but if I keep swinging, I get as many ink sacs as I get hits on it. I average 4 sacs per squid.

Apparently there's a known memory leak if your view distance is set to Far.  It'll pile up until it's taking up a gig, then crash.

So, uh, be one below that.

not always. sometimes you get food poisoning, which manifests as food drain, or (i think?) health drain if food is low.

Food poisoning seems to have an assortment of effects, chosen at random. My first experience with it, I simply did not regenerate health until the poison effect went away. Other people have reported effects from hunger drain to health drain to simply being unable to eat more food until it passed.

My limited experience with it showed I took half as much damage while poison, which doesn't make sense really.

The obsidian redstone exploit is still in 1.8. I built a big stack of obsidian in case they fix it, and dubbed it the Strategic Obsidian Reserve.

Yeah, the real horrors of the game are no longer the bastards that blow up and destroy everything, and they aren't the guys they teleport and kill you.
They are small spiders THAT SPAWN THROUGH WALLS.

I was in a sealed room, mining some wood underground. I had sealed up the area I came from for navigation purposes so I was in a dead end when out of a wall a spider attacked. Then another spider. Soon there were 4 spiders in a 5x8 area. This shit needs to get fixed.

Spiders apparently do not need line of sight to track you.  This is directly related to why there is a series of glass ports in the roof of my cave entry, leading up to a giant, glass-surrounded hole with lava at the bottom.  I will watch every last spider burn.

The nastiest thing in 1.8 is not Endermen, but a glitch in the new mushroom spreading routines that let them replace solid blocks. I thought Endermen were lifting blocks in my house until I realized mushrooms were always present at the crime scene.

Found my first stronghold!  It was weird and huge but didn't have much in it except a chest with three apples and some iron and bread.

That's always been the problem with Minecraft dungeons. There's fucking diamonds and gold already in the game and they are rare materials. Why do the even rarer dungeon chests have string and wood in them?

Well, apples are rare as fuck - outside of Stronghold chests, the only way to get one legit is for Notch to log in to your server and for you to kill him - and it was neat to find some.  But still, I was hoping for more of a treasure trove or something.

I guess mossy bricks are a very limited building material though, if I wanted to tear it apart.

Apples are neat, but the rarest part of the stronghold is the stronghold itself.
One to three per map. Ones made in pre-release have only one. Pretty neat, bros.
