Sure Is tri-Ace In Here
« on: January 22, 2009, 10:44:01 AM »

Star Ocean: Second Evolution is out in the US.

Spike "Shinji" Spencer plays Claude.  The lead character.

I'm gonna love this remake SO HARD. :wuv:

EDIT: Rena is played by the same girl who played Estelle in Tales of Vesperia.  Actually, I'm thinking a bunch of the ToV cast did this, because Spencer played Yeager in Vesperia...I gotta do a little more research.  Looks like I have to play through both stories to get everyone now...

The question is, how excited does he get when he finds out the enemy is beHIND him?

I don't know.  It takes eight years to get out of the introduction of the game.  At least there's some amusing voice acting to giggle at while waiting for it to end.

In the spare minutes I have everyday, I treat myself to playing a new game + of Radiata Stories.
Like Rondo of Swords, this is another game where you should take the "evil" (i.e., human) path first. The reasons for this are threefold:
1) On your first playthrough you're likely to get most of your friends in Radiata.
2) With somewhat careful playing you can enjoy the assistance of the guild leaders, who are about a million times more powerful than any character you can ally with from the fairy creatures side. Which is not exactly essential for the main game, but makes the arduous, optional, but extremely lucrative post-game dungeon, in which you get an amazing ultimate skill and a zillion power-up items all of which transfer over to your new game+.
3) There's a shop in humantown that sells power-up items. Yeah, they cost zillions, but who cares? You'll have more money than the least scrupulous plutocrat in the world after beating the post-game dungeon, and those power-up items you can take with you to your new game+. You can also take the cash with you, but the power-up items are much more useful.

In short:
It's easier to develop your new game + Jack into the unstoppable badass he believes he is if you side with humans on your first playthrough. And there's nothing more fun than beating up Elwen everyday to farm for growth stones.

I had never finished Valkyrie Profile 2 back when it came out. I loved it so much that I played it non-stop for a ridiculous amount of time, but as great as it was, one day I took a break and never returned to it. Too much of a good thing I guess.

Anyway, I just started a new game, and I've fallen in love again. I'm going to pace myself this time, so maybe I can get through it without burning myself out. That would be pretty awesome. I'm a sucker for a great battle system, and VP2's is definitely up there with the big ones.

On a different topic entirely: am I the only person who can't play the new Star Ocean game because Till the End of Time completely ruined the series' setting? No matter what kind of people the main heroes were, no matter what heart-wrenching tragedies they went through, no matter how much I connected with them on an emotional level, in the back of my head I'd never be able to shake off the fact that I'm essentially playing as a group of NPCs. Kind of makes it hard to get caught up in their epic struggle when you just know that a few years after the end credits at least one of them is going to be hanging around one of the starting towns asking newbies to slay 20 space rats.

Word of God apparently says Star Ocean: The Last Hope occurs in an alternate universe where Star Ocean 3 never happened.

Good enough for me that someone figured out that SO3 was a super dumb idea.

Being the terrible person I am, I said "Fuck you" to the secondary market of Valkyrie Profile for PSX and torrented it.  I consider myself justified, seeing as I owned it back in the day, and own the PSP port of it.

Hit Chapter 3 today, and Freya demands an archer which I cannot give, as the game saw fit to give me Nanami and Yumei, two mages I will probably NEVER use.

I FUCKING WANT JANUS, ASSHOLES.

I've just started playing Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for the first time... if the first couple hours are any indication, it has pretty much the most directionless plot of any videogame I've ever played.

Of course, I also just found out that to get the ending which doesn't suck, I need to start over from the beginning on a higher difficulty level...

The game is extremely episodic in nature; there are a few threads that come together but even then you're rarely given a full picture. It's the style, you know. Love it or hate it and all that. I took the storytelling as a series of beautiful, tragic, sometimes bittersweet vignettes, which is essentially what it is, and enjoyed it deeply on that level. It's a sad fairy tale about the fate of a broken world in its death throes, and you have to dig that sort of atmosphere.

Isn't that just a remix of the battle theme from SO2?

...which might be a remix of the battle theme from SO1 for all I know but like the first ten minutes of that game were enough to remind me why I generally hate everything that company puts out.

(And before you fanboys start giving me more reasons to euthanize you, no, I haven't played Valkyrie Profile yet, but I'm gonna go try it now.  Its pedigree does not fill me with optimism though.)

Don't worry, I already know that anyone who enjoys Star Ocean 3 feels a deep sense of shame and self-loathing for their shitty taste.

Eh, from what I've seen Brentai, their games all have very similar music.  I thought SO4's battle theme was a remix of SO3's at first, too.

That's Motoi Sakuraba for you.  Dude only really seems to know how to play the same shit over and over again (except Valkyrie Profile 2 and Tales games).  Although as far as I know, SO4 has its own battle music, but you get to waste time on Planet Roak, where SO1's music DOES play.

But that's just what I was told by someone else.
