But only if you're some kind of putz who likes watching videogames instead of actually playing them.

Considering how Walker: Texas Ranger has upped and shot himself in the head over the prospect of playing this thing again I'd say YouTubing this bastard's time well spent!

It is no bad thing to play Valkyrie Profile again, for it is a great game.

It is a bad thing to have to replay the intro again. That thing is just way too talky.

PROTIP: Just start on Hard mode your next time and mash through the intro. Then keep a separate save right after the talky bit ends so you can go back whenever you want to replay without having to go through all of that.

So someone else had the same idea. Funny that they chose Arngrim of all people to have the long, deep, angsty, tortured introduction.

...I think my brother might have even paid a friend to get through the intro. :sadpanda:

I've still got a hard mode save in the original PSX version just past the intro purely for that reason.

Jelanda: :richiam:
Arngrim: :tldr:
Jelanda: :THATWAY:
Evil Vizier: :proceed:
Arngrim:
Monster Jelanda: :HUGE:
Arngrim: :nosir:

And at the end of it all...

So.  I was going to tell this game to go fuck itself due to  :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: :tldr: but once it finally shut the fuck up (and at this point in most tri-Ace games this is where you're faced with the enemy that kills you in three hits before you have a chance to save) it was actually... good.  Like, actually enjoyable.  Finally getting the groove of the combo system thingy and pulling off some crazy 30 hit combo ending with a completely unexpected GIANT LANCE on the first boss probably helped.

Don't get me wrong, I still fully expect to get trapped in some inescapable dungeon later full of enemies I have no chance of fighting, but for now I can at least say that the tri-Ace library isn't a total loss (okay and to be fair Radiata Stories wasn't actually terrible so much as incredibly bland).

Brentai reminded me, but speaking of Valkyrie Profile, they finally seem to have gotten over the "far too long and talky intro" for Covenant of the Plume, which I've been playing lately. It's still talky, but it's only about two battles worth of talking and moves along at a fairly good clip.
You'll be sacrificing your best friend for power in no time!
Plus you can skip scenes now. It's still got some issues, like battle animations for everything in an SRPG and I don't want to have to
kill the plucky assassin girl to win the next battle instead of the asshole guy just because I'm not good enough friends with that guy yet
, but that's pretty minor.

Also as far as I remember all dungeons in VP are escapable, so you can always run away. If you're good enough you can freeze and dodge all monsters anyway so you don't have to be worried about getting wiped on the way to the exit. Most of the time.

And of course, to get the best ending, you can't sacrifice ANYONE EVER except during the tutorial showing you how to do so.

I'm just a sucker who is easily swayed by 'OH NO I WAS DOING ALL OF THIS FOR THEM I DON'T WANT TO DIE' too, but you know.

I got so into building up and sacrificing characters for the nebulous purpose of helping win the war in heaven that I screwed myself in my first playthrough and had to start over.

Wait, you had to start over the game from the beginning because of some mistake you couldn't go back and fix?

That's unforgivably bad game design.

The game keeps telling you it needs the best warriors, and doesn't really throw anything at you in the way of "btw, save some"
Guild's complaint is somewhat valid.

Yeah, generally the game only asks for one, maybe two characters per chapter and gives out some of the things they're looking for in a warrior at the time.  You get about two-four new einherjar a chapter so there's only one real way to leave yourself totally screwed.

The game really does seem to be into not telling you what you're really supposed to be doing, which is kind of endemic of that era.

I probably didn't HAVE to start over. I'm just anal like that. VP is one of the few games I've ever looked up a walkthrough on before beating once, and then only to figure out if I should give up Arngrim (sp) and my vampire dude.

You can't give up Arngrim. They won't take him.

On the plus side it means you'll never have to fight alone.

I can't decide whether it is boring to have Lenneth and Arngrim at the front of your party for the entire game...

... or too wildly practical + they rule + their supers combo with almost any super. And Lenneth can use a bow for a change of pace.

Good call on the FAQ. When I replayed for Hard Mode + Best End, I
got to kill the Dark Lady, see all of Lezard's stuff, the full Barbarosa arc, etc. I essentially answered my earlier question of why half the tracks in the sound test were "unused."
Bro-tip: Max Guts whenever it's practical, but max Guts.

It's a damn shame that Maddie Blaustein or whatever her name is died.  She did the best voices for Arngrim and Lezard.

Liam O'Brien as Lezard just makes him sound slightly gay and full of himself instead of crazy and full of himself.

Ah. I guess that's cool, but then what Doom said about a boring game. And I liked Arngrim too much to not have him in my party. I guess I didn't like VP enough.
