Vacation Advice
« on: June 29, 2009, 06:28:51 PM »

So over the next month, I'm going to be (at one point or another) in or around Stockholm, Toronto, Chicago, Buffalo, Cleveland, and Fargo. Anybody have any firsthand advice about things to do or not do while in any of those places?

Anybody else visiting fun places?

That is a random smattering of places I've never been to. What is the logic/motivation behind this whirlwind tour?

Toronto is in the middle of an intense garbage strike that is not likely to end immediately.

As much as we'd like to say hi, your nostrils may not enjoy such a vacation.

Another garbage strike? What's with your city, Mongo?

Our garbage doesn't like to work. The perils of unionization.

It's actually two discrete, unrelated vacations that happened to be scheduled consecutively - I'm going to Sweden for an archaeology field school (I'm going to be analyzing viking stuff!), and then it's just a series of visits to east coast cities to see family and baseball games and maybe some architecture and stuff like that.

Although I'm going to try and fit in a trip to the House on the Rock.

Fuck Toronto
 :advice:
Visit Kingston and the 1000 Islands

Again, your nostrils will thank you for that one.  Actually, I plan to kayak the 1000 islands sometime this August on a couple days off.

The house on the rock is pretty awesome though I don't know that it's by itself worth the 3 hour or so drive from Chicago. If you like theatre I can pretty strongly recommend American Players Theatre which is pretty close to the House on the Rock and also pretty great. The only thing on the currently showing list I've seen is Comedy of Errors but I loved it when I saw it there several years ago.

Well, the travel arrangements for Toronto are already made, so garbage strike be damned. You really don't think they'll have it resolved by mid-late July, though? I would have thought somebody would break by then.

Sadly

Also: I will be in Seattle for the last week of July, both weekends inclusive, so uh... I hope your plans are for an earlier time?

It is. This will be the third time I'm going. Of course, the trip is for the usual purpose of visting my tragic, senile, semi-institutionalized in-laws (well, okay, this only applies to one of them...).

25 miles south and we could hang out.
