I guess now's the time to figure out what people's max budget is. Looks like the hotel will cost roughly $40-$50 a night unless you go for the supa-cheep options.

I'll try to call tomorrow and see the prices for locations Jon wasn't able to get tonight.

I have now booked Friday the 21st off.

I have also updated the list below with pricing.

I don't some checking around for the hotels in my area.  It's downtownish and close to Mongrel so we're all good there.  I cannot attest to the quality and security of all of these places, but they are here.  Some of them I also didn't wait to get the information because I started at 11:00 and they weren't able to pick up their damned phones.

Most of the hotels that Koipond listed are downtown, which does put them close to both my partment and also Koipond's place, but unfortunately this also increases their price.

I did a little more research and there's a hotel that isn't too far away from us (5.5 Kilometers, so too long to walk in any short time, but the downtown ones would be just as far from me) that you could get two queen beds in for $118 a night (and two double beds cheaper).

Linkety-link

Looks like staying out of downtown might be the way to go to keep costs down. I will try and search out some more non-downtown options, though the problem is that the geography of Toronto/East York means that most of the nearby hotels ARE the ones downtown.

So, we need some definite information:

1) Who can afford staying in a hotel? Assume around $75, based on three people for two nights. We can get that cheaper if a fourth (or even a fifth) stays in the hotel room.
2) Geo, do you want in on the hotel-crash or do you want to drive back and forth?
3) Someone needs to actually make the reservation. Other people will pay this person in cash. We'll need to work this out sooner rather than later as rates will only rise over time. I would suggest trying to get this bagged before the weekend (note that it does not cost money to place a reservation, though hotels will usually require a credit card for a reservation - THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU MUST PAY WITH CREDIT CARD. Paying in cash is okay).
4) ...
5) FIGHTS TO THE DEATH FOR THE BEDS
6) But the make-up sex is great!
7) [Obvious joke about Buge goes here]

Okay, but I get to be player one.

First question:  are there military discounts.  I know that Best western does that, as they do CAA discounts.  If you reserve in my name, but go off your credit card and I end up paying up front, I believe that I can get the reduced rate which is significant for best westerns (they hate it), and then you fucks can reimburse me on the spot in the room, sorry but I don't take sex in lieu of payment..

I did some more sniffing on the internet.

Here's a couple that aren't that far, but are still outside the downtown area. Also, a number of places charge more but offer no additional accommodations if you have more than two people staying in the room. So a better rate for the same room can be obtained by simply saying there are only two people staying. If you're not comfortable with that, well... best speak up now!

Best Western Roehampton Hotel
808 Mount Pleasant Rd
Toronto, ON M4P 2L2
(416) 487-5101
2 double beds at $79.99+tax, non-refundable, if booked in advance through 1-800-992-2694, or $119 per night if booked through the hotel (in both cases that's the rate if it's "only two people" wink wink).

Crowne Plaza Toronto Don Valley
1250 Eglinton Ave E
Toronto, ON M3C1J3
(888) 444-0401
2 double beds friday is $109 and saturday is $129

EconoLodge Downtown Toronto
335 Jarvis Street
Toronto, ON M5B2C2
(416) 962-4686
2 double beds at $105 per night, $95 per night with military discount (this is only the TWO PERSON rate).

Days Inn Toronto East
1684 Queen St. East
Toronto, ON M4L 1G6
(416) 694-1177
2 double beds $116.95 +$10 for each extra person (same accommodations)

Fort.

Fred.

Geo.

See above posts.

I need you guys to confirm what you want to do, what your budgets are, etc. if you guys don't mind lying your pants off about how many dorks are staying in the room (this is extremely unlikely to actually have any consequences, it's more of a question if you actually care about that kind of thing - it's not my intention to make anyone uncomfortable or to force anyone to do anything they might find questionable).

If a hotel stay is going to make this visit prohibitively expensive say something. The longer we waffle, the more expensive it will get. If a hotel is not an option, or all of a sudden you're not sure you want to come, well, then we shall have to try alternate plans.

Um. Okay. I'm going to say that my budget bufor the whole trip is $200 (including $65 round-trip bus ticket), but with knowledge that it might go as high as $300. Any higher than that and I'm probably not going to be able to swing it. I don't think that staying in a hotel would make it too much? Especially if we plan to scam the front desk (which I am more than cool with).

In summary, yes.

Oh, my plan was just to come up for a day or so and then head back to Cambridge. I don't need a hotel or room or anything.

That's totally fine. I just didn't know what you wanted to do.

Um. Okay. I'm going to say that my budget bufor the whole trip is $200 (including $65 round-trip bus ticket), but with knowledge that it might go as high as $300. Okay, that should be good enough once you consider food purchases etc. but this is where Fort comes in. If Fort is in, has money, and is okay with the plan, then you should be able to get a room (two double beds... MANSEX... OR FIGHT FOR THE FLOOR!) for a non back-breaking price.

If Fort is NOT coming, then the whole thing might become moot, since I should be able to squeeze SCD and Fred at my place if Buge can see about staying with his relatives.

This is where I do some number-crunching.

Of the cheaper ones, most seem to come in at about the $120+tax per night mark, which comes to a rough total of $280. Divided three ways, that's a little under $95, which you folks may find steep. I'm going to go check out the EconoLodge tonight to see if the $95 is a good discount or "soooo not worth it". The EconoLodge+tax & discount divided three ways would come to under $75.

I think you need to pay in advance with a credit card for the $79.99 rate at the Roehampton, but I don't have the $200 for that right now. If someone else can hook that up, you guys can split that three ways for a cost that's just over $60.

Finally, Buge, I hate to ask, but if the possibility of you staying with your relatives can be considered, would they be the type to put up a friend for two nights? Just thinking we might be able to save the hassle and cost of a hotel if we can find a way to fit you guys all somewhere. At the same time, if they're not the type to be okay with that, then it's okay, don't bother asking.

Whew, sorry for being late on this one.  I'm one seriously poor motherfucker at the mo'.  I think my budget is somewhere around like $170, so I'd be pretty happy lying about how many people are in a room/sleeping on a floor OR if it comes down to it I'd be comfortable dropping out in favor of making plans easier on everybody else.

Fort is in, the Plan is rad, but does Fort have enough money!

Relevant question: Assuming the cost must come out of your budget, how much are your bus tickets?

21 day advance purchase tickets come in at 21 dollars.  Actually, I might be able to swing another 21 dollars anyhow.  Consider that my postbus budget.

Okay, that's not so bad, as it puts you in a similar situation to Fred.

Also, I checked out the EconoLodge. It's nothing great, but it'll do if need be and it's within walking distance of both Koipond and the heart of downtown. It has no parking (I think that's part of the reason it's cheaper) and is in a general area of Toronto where the bums are starting to lose the gentrification battle (i.e. looks meh, but is actually okay). If none of you can swing that credit card thing, it should do fine.

Let me know and I'll make the reservation. I'll wait for Buge to see if he can put anyone up first (just in case), but otherwise is everyone okay with this plan?

Yeah, I don't know, I wouldn't ask, but considering the financial duress everyone is under, it woudl be something of a coup if it turned out that it was okay.

 :goodnews:

Some wonderful unexpected expenses showed up today and said "Fortinbras, I'm here to put you slightly in debt for the first time in your life and also make you into a complete asshole.  You know what to do."

So (barring available floorspace at someone's house) I've gotta drop out of the overnight stuff.  What I'd love to do if everyone else can dig it is show up on the earliest Saturday morning bus, hang out a while and see the city a little bit and leave on the last one.

SO

SORRY

Sucks man. If you want to still swing by on saturday then that's fine by me. No reason for you not to at least come and visit if you can.

Buge this probably means you should find out about your relatives ASAP. If you can bring a friend, then Fort will still be able to come for the whole weekend. If you can't bring a friend, but can at least stay with your relatives yourself, we'll at least we'll have accommodations sorted, because a hotel is now too pricey for the remaining folks who were up for it.

Right, while I'm going to have silent spots, I will be coming, do have leave booked for the weekend and will be coming early on the friday.

Military discounts are a go, but my credit card is stuck in a block of ice at home, so that may cause one logistical challenge.

So tl;dr  - what's the score for people right now?

Well, I think the hotel is out because we don't have enough peeps. If Buge can stay with his relatives, then we are okay for space, since you and Fred can stay here and everyone else will just be coming for the Saturday.

This also assumes Buge's relatives don't live out in the middle of nowhere.

I may have one or two backup plans, but they're not assured.
