Snail mail
« on: April 17, 2008, 03:03:51 PM »

We've always had problems with the mailmen around here. Being in the remote vicinity of packages makes them instantly retarded.

Sometimes we'd find little notes in the mailbox. "I tried to drop off your package but you weren't home! You can pick it up at STUPIDLY REMOTE LOCATION tomorrow after 1 PM!"

Except I was always home. I'm always home. And the mailbox is located on the wall right across my bedroom. When they open it, it makes a hell of racket across the entire appartment. We know when they show up. We know they're there. We know they don't even ring or knock. It's not that far. We live at ground level. You have about ten steps to go from the mailbox to our door.

And the pick-up spot? They never even get the packages until at least 48 hours later. So the notes lie twice. Oh, the wasted time. We placed several official complaints, to no avail.

Once I caught a mail truck pull in our driveway. The mailman got out with his little "not home" paper all ready, and I opened the door at the exact moment he hanged it on our doorknob. He gave me the dirtiest look ever, returned to his truck, got my package and gave it to me. He left in a hurry.

Today my neighbor knocked. She found a package of mine lying in the parking lot. The kind of package you normally have to sign on before they let you take it.

Fuck Canada Post. Rot and die, postal workers. In that order.

Shit man, you should try dealing with Purolator (which I do every day at work... ohboyohboyohboy).

Those fuckers won't even DELIVER to half the places people live. Crazy locations like... apartment buildings and houses.

Canada Post may be slow and overpriced, but fuck me, at least I know the damn thing'll get there.

This happened within the last year.  Usually when I do uniform orders online, they always arrive by xpresspost to the front door of my room in my apartment and they leave it there.

Not anymore...

I've had the same story over and over again, except the only solstice is that the local drug store just threw in an outlet, where my packages go.  Hooray private/public sector cooperation, I say!

That being said, you should complain about your service.  Well-written complaints have been the only way I can fight the bureaucracy, and that's exactly what I've been doing since Jan.

A while ago, I bought all Max's old D&D books.  They came in a big cardboard box that the postman left, uncovered, underneath our fucking gutter, on a rainy day.  The box was destroyed.

To make matters worse, my dad was the one who noticed it, and he was so incensed that he made me open it in front of him to see if anything was damaged.  He gave me an interesting look when he saw what was in there.

Along those same lines, the mailman left my ipod delivery on my doorstep, on a morning where there was a storm.  The next day when I got around to checking the mail, there it was--a frozen box iced to the doorstep.  I was extremely worried it wouldn't work, but lucky me, it did.

I wish that my postman would leave things at the stupidly remote location! Then I'd have Niku's PDS 2007 gift right now instead of the unplaced shame of having failed at something beautiful.

The scenario, as I understand it, is that the package was left in an unlocked room that all of the building's residents passed by several times a day. Every other package that I've received and not been around for has required a lengthy journey, but at least those finger-puppets and DVDs are safe where they should be.

terra's too good to participate in things he signs up for.

or save donation money for the board he runs.

or not change people's passwords at random.

or be civil.

You should post about it over at the other board and watch Vance's impotent rage.

He'd dismiss it with a well-placed "WAY TO LEAVE FOREVER, KAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"

:hurr: No matter how bad you are Thad, it's going to be your fault.

I have to mail a package off later in the week. Would you like a replacement "gift" that I didn't remember to remove from it's lead casing before sealing my actual PDS package? I'm pretty sure it's not releasing any alphas, betas, or gammas, but it is very likely to still be releasing thetans.

In fairness, by the fourth time it probably IS reasonable to make fun of you for it.

Where he's utterly lacking in irony (as he generally is) is the part where Terra is still the all-time record holder for that particular sport.

I got shafted twice. I think the first time was Moctobot, the second was definitely Terra. Even after a friendly e-mail exchange, Terra left me with zilch. Thank goodness Silversong's PDS more than made up for it. Where is, Silversong, anyway?

Also, I'd like to chime in re: postboxes far, far away. I live close to two, maybe three authorized Canada Post outlets (one of which is in a mall). All are within walking/biking/busing distance. The one which gets sent all of my mail larger than a manila envelope is, of course, not. It's a dinky little greeting card hole-in-the wall crammed between a plus-sized fashion outlet and a European deli. The bus route there and back is the least reliable in the city, so I pretty much have to set aside three hours to pick up my mail.

I request that I get a non-deadbeat this Christmas. </sour grapes>

Yes, but I HATE YOU. :rage:

I've got a couple things I could part with. Mostly because I keep my eye out for PDS-able gems no matter where I go. I My tiny corner of this apartment is overfull of dangerous things.

Your PM should also include what sort of interactive media devices you own. i.e. Do you have a VCR, DVD player, GBA, etc.
I'm not actually :rage: Ted. If you PM me I'll (probably) send you something.
I don't know when I'll send it all off or how much I'll send, but I may even go so far as to write a handwritten letter! With a PEN.

Horror stories abound of underpaid postal workers who will drop fragile parcels, leave expensive things at the door, bend "do not bend" envelopes, and drive past claiming you weren't in so they can go home earlier.

Clearly, the only solution is to deliver all parcelry by hand.

I told the story of what a horrific ordeal it was to get my computer last October.

The funny thing was that part of my motivation in getting it was that building my own invariably turns out to be a huge, time-consuming, soul-crushing hassle.
