My anger is not from the use of god-awful terms

Either you think I need military experience to discuss imaginary wars, you just tripped over your own feet because you're mad at me for using the word redneck, or you're stalking me.

I think "Quit it" works effectively in all of these situations.

A solid summary.

Wow, I never once intended to become a troll.  However, any serious discussion thread I post in explodes immediately afterward.  Is this a coincidence, or am I actually that good of an accidental troll?

I know I'm an utter imbecile, but this is weird.

I read his suggesting you join because he thinks you'd be good at it. Or something.

Still can't stop laughing about Shinra saying the VC had no significant outside training.

Also SCD is 100% correct on the Golden Age bit. This is excellently symbolized with fossil fuels and our exponential consumption of this free energy. Also cars.

And I give it 40 years due to bioweapons/nuclear proliferation. Personally hoping for an AI to kill us all. Gogogo terrible computer security and emergent (re: unpredictable) intelligence programming strategies.

And since this was addressed to me and therefore I MUST RESPOND:
Quote from: Shinra
And how long will our immediate neighbors remain our allies for that matter? Mexico and Canada are irrelevant militarily, but that hasn't always been the case. "But canada has been irrelevant military for 300 years!" you say? Well, the english didn't expect us to revolt after 200 years of passive settlement, either.

Because the U.S. has such a great tradition of respecting the sovereignty of nations anywhere in the Americas.

Random personal comment:
Quote from: Shinra
The catalyst may be invasion by foreign power, oppression by federal or state governments, or even something as unlikely as complete socio-economic collapse, but eventually the time will come when America needs it's guns again. ?

It's funny because I place them in the exact opposite order. Oh America and our capacity for violence and divisive politics.

As for something related to the topic: random anecdotal evidence has shown me that guns are popular among transgender due to their high murder rate.

I will say, while I can't see guns making the difference in an insurgency, you probably do want a boat load of  guns in the event of complete socio-economic collapse. I'm clearly super optimistic compared to the rest of you though.

I was killing myself laughing at that last night.

I mean, I find it funny that I largly agree with Shinra's view, while finding his own particular reasoning for holding those views to be ill-informed at best and outright loopy at worst.

As for a complete socio-economic collapse, I'm not as sold on that as I once was. I've found that it's actually a kind of very wishful thinking. Like the recent recession - a large number of people really, really wanted to believe that it was a second great depression.

That's not to say that I think things can't get much much worse*, only that the chances are much higher that it's going to be rather a unspectaular stripe of awful, rather than any Fallout/Mad Max type of stuff.

*I've repeatedly found myself playing devil's advocate in discussions about the possibility of the species' extinctinction. While total extinction is (currently) highly unlikely, most people seem totally unwilling to acknowledge it as even a distant possibility.

http://www.gq.com/news-politics/blogs/death-race/2012/08/the-problem-with-gun-control-guns-are-fun-and-no-one-likes-being-controlled.html

I thought this article presented an interesting enough angle on the subject to resurrect a three-year-dead thread.

This is also the problem with transportation.  There's a strong argument for just doing away with private vehicles, but people want to climb into the fucking things and jet them off at 110 mph and kill each other.

The only way to be perfectly safe is to make everybody else boring.

Coincidentally, there's been some recent silliness on Twitter over an American cop wigging out in Calgary where he couldn't wear his gun.

Granted, the guy is from Michigan, so I can't actually blame him for being PTSD-crazy.

Kalamazoo is a place where you can reasonably expect any given stranger to suddenly attack you.  Spend 20 years there and you might forget that it's not normal.

That said, throwing a LAHWD JAYSUS CHRAHST in the middle of his report just makes him look insane and is pretty much embarrassing to the entire country.  Not that we're not used to that, too.

To be fair, if a couple of strangers approached me in a park and said something cryptic and nonsensical like "you been to the stampede yet" i think I might feel a little threatened. Saying something weird to catch somebody off guard is a pretty common tactic of robbers.

It's not like nobody's ever been mugged, stabbed, shot or raped in Canada. I know it's not exactly common, but really.

I'm assuming by "the Stampede" they meant the Stampede.
