I'm always mystified by the drama here. Not that it happens at all, but about how it is born. Maybe it's because I don't go to #finalfight much.

I've been here for a long time. Not from the beginning, but let's just say I'm fairly sure that I've seen the first posts of most of the people around today. And I think that for the most part I've remained fairly neutral. I literally have no grudges whatsoever. I've had arguments, sure, but from my side of the monitor it's never escalated to bona fide drama of any note. And I can honestly say I've never not been blindsided by the rise of drama here. Anytime it pops up, I'm like, "wait, what? how did that happen? how did it get from there to here?". It's... It's like...

It's like an iceberg. But it's a weird blasphemous iceberg that is a gigantic frozen continent floating on a single molecule of ice on the surface of the water. That is our drama. Something from nothing. A tragic creation myth.

I think we're smart people accustomed to dealing with idiots, used to struggling against the relentless winds of pure dumb that blow away everything around us, holding fast to our little candles of wisdom as best as we can. But there are many of us here, each with different candles, of various colors and sizes, and whenever we happen to oppose, our first reflex is to assume the others are part of that abominable storm of stupidity that assaults us at all times. And we fight the perceived threat. I can't blame anyone for having this reflex, but it's important to realize that it exists.

Even then, I stick around because sometimes we realize what we've got. At its best, this place is a haven where, for just a moment in our day, we don't have to keep our guard up like we do when we know we're surrounded by the ignorant, the careless, and the imbecile. I never have to worry that you guys have no idea what I'm talking about. I never have to explain to you than Iran is not a place in Iraq. You all know that a balloon filled with regular air will not float very high at all in our atmosphere. That is fucking wonderful. That is why I can call someone racist as a joke without the least worry that someone might be honestly offended. There might be a slight misunderstanding but it will end with Comic Sans MS and a picture of a guy in drag pretending to be magical.

I don't know about you guys but that is precious to me. This may not be the last bastion of intelligence of the internet but it's the only one with so many people I already like in it.
