Figured out what I was doing wrong.  You have all these new lancing tools, and I wasn't really using them. :whoops:

Barioth is still a bitch, but I'm getting a handle on him.  Just wish he'd part with some clawsgoddamnthey'reaquestrewardwhathehell.

Make it a priority to build and upgrade his lance. The sharpness is HUGE and more importantly it has 40% affinity, which is God Damn Ridiculous.

Is it just me, or is qurupeco WAY LESS FUCKING FUN TO FIGHT than kut-ku?

The asshole calls more monsters (LOL RATHIAN OUT OF NOWHERE), can buff/heal himself and the monsters he calls and can DEBUFF YOU

Nah, he's pretty easy.  Far less tail spins kinda makes him cake.  Just run for the hills if he calls rathian, or smack one of them with a dungbomb.  G. Jaggi ain't no thang, and Rudroth isn't that bad either.  As for Peco's spit, he always aims to his right.

Sorry dude if you don't like taking a quick break to beat the shit out of Jaggi I don't know what's wrong with you. I've never seen him summon Rathalos outside of multiplayer.

Quropeco can summon some insane shit in Multi I understand, way before you're supposed to fight it.

In single player, it's usually just Jaggi, yeah. The best thing to do in this case is either dung bomb quro or the other monster, or leave screen for a minute. One of the two will disperse quickly. If Quropeco has taken a beating, he'll fuck off soon, if not, the other monster will leave around the time they realize that Quropeco isn't another
Rathian or another Jaggi.

The trick to Quropeco is, yeah, fewer tail whips and the tail whips do less damage. He's also not nearly as dangerous as Yian Kut Ku was when enraged. the only really heavily damaging ability he has is his flint, and you can lower the frequency of the attack by busting his flints off, and if he's low on stamina he can fail to create a spark. It's also incredibly easy to dodge - there's a long lead up to the attack, even when he's enraged, and he can only attack in a straight line with it. When he starts clapping his flints together, run, dodge, or block.

I don't think you can sever his tail, so don't bother. Focus attacks on the wings to break his flints. If you need a strange beak, break the head, otherwise don't bother. Other than that, attacking his feet a lot will make him fall, the trip damage threshhold seems to be very low and you can put him on his ass constantly. As a lancer, at this point I usually aim for the center of the body and stampede, but you can also put down some barrel bombs and blow his shit up.

By Focus attacks do you mean that counter blow the lance has?

and while we are on the lance, does that shield smack have any real use past Braining kelbis for their horns?

Focus attack is not a thing, it was advice. Focus attacks on the wings.

Also the shield advance blocks until you do the shield bash. Helpful in roars. Otherwise shield bash adds up stun damage when you attack the head.

The shield advance is awesome.  Not only does it allow you to advance through any attack, but it nullifies any damage the attack would have done to you even if you blocked normally.  It tends to take less stamina then a normal block, too.

The counter charge will do likewise, although it leaves you open if you don't follow up with attacks and dodges.  A good thing to note, is that you can use the counter charge to do an almost continuous string of attacks.  If you press x right after you begin the counter, it will immediately perform an upthrust that you can follow up with two additional forward/up thrusts.  You can cancel the reset animation by then immediately performing another counter charge.  Really useful for immobilized enemies, like agnaktor's heat beam.

Oh, the counter charge doesn't work against some attacks, like rath fireballs from the air, so keep that in mind.  Shield advance will work against anything you could have blocked normally with guard up skill.

Is there still the 4th wall slaughtering "pop goes the weasel" jingle every time you cook meat? That would surely expedite my potential purchase.

I've been going slow because of finals and I've been helping people starting out online instead of advancing in 3* online. Mostly grinding offline otherwise.
