Why's that? It's pretty well prophesized that Zoro's gonna face Mihawk again one day.  I think it's more that even if Luffy is stronger than Mihawk, it's a parallel progression.. no matter how raw strong Luffy is, he can't bring an ounce of finesse against Mihawk. Which is why he cancels his Jet Bazooka. A bit of Haki at work too, probably.

Also rofflecopter at Buggy being the one man in the world who can negate most of Mihawk's power. I bet it propels his legend further
:nyoro~n:
Actually, my initial reaction was that Squad stabbed Whitebeard in an attempt to keep him out of the main battle. He knows something like that isn't going to kill Whitebeard, but he doesn't want Whitebeard to get himself killed. Could be wrong, of course.
Sengoku rolls up his sleeves, and looks worried, about a dude with a huge sword wound in his chest. Whitebeard 2012.

But now we're about to learn why Sengoku is in charge of Light Man, Ice Man and Magma Man. D:

Indeed. As evidenced by the bonus chapter, Sengoku can be a massive badass.

Also: turns out Akainu is indeed a Logia. I actually had him pegged as a Paramecia-type like Mr. 3 or Magellan, except with Lava.

I love how One Piece manages typical shonen one-uppery without making me recoil in disgust. I only get MORE AND MORE PUMPED.

I usually attribute this to something akin to Stockholm syndrome, or perhaps a sunk costs fallacy.

So how many years of his life has Luffy frittered away so far? Is he going to live to legal drinking age?

I think part of it is that most of these insanely powerful characters were actually introduced fairly early on. Hawkeyes Mihawk, still considered one of the most powerful characters in the series, was introduced over 500 chapters ago having had personally decimated an entire fleet of ships. And Gold Rogers, whose shadow had been hanging the entire series since its very conception, is (was) by definition the most powerful guy of all.

And Luffy is still going to surpass them all.

In canon timeline is somewhat in excess of a year at this point. Most arcs aren't more than a week long.

Erm, I meant in terms of using Gear 2 and surviving impossible-to-survive poisons. That kind of thing.

The manga's gonna end with Luffy being acknowledged as King of the pirates, then getting killed by his life drainage.

I called it.
