Fuck everyone who doesn't have faith in Edgar Wright.

When he breaks it for the first time, possibly with this very movie, then and only then can you naysay his upcoming pictures.

A friend of mine insulted Hot Fuzz in the same sentence in which he declared Super Troopers to be, "Absolutely fucking brilliant.  It's high brow!"

He also insulted Anchorman, saying it was too lowest common denominator, again while defending a film where cops try and push a dead hookers head through a wall and another cop tries to have sex on the hood of a car with the wife of a guy he pulled over for speeding.

These are the kinds of people who diss Edgar Wright.

I just want to know how did anyone ever expect that "Toronto Hipsters: The Movie" would be funny as anything but a documentary in the first place?

I thought they were removing all references to Toronto.

Or at least the fight in Honest Ed's.

See, keeping it actually situated in Toronto is one of the few things that would actually interest me in the movie. That's one of the things that makes the comic distinct. Losing the references to Toronto (or any city - I'm trying not to be biased even though I live here), just make it kind of generic and lame.

They're making an Adele Blanc-Sec movie?!

HOLY SHIT. DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT

(Adele Blanc-Sec is a famous comic series written by Jaques Tardi - one of the finest comics artists in Europe - in the early and mid-70's. At turns sardonic, dark, silly, and adventurous Tardi wrote a strong female lead for a comic long before it became fashionable to do so).

Also, I hear more of Tardi's work is going to be translated into English (largely irrelevant to me, but at least I can finally recommend Tardi books to people besides The Bloody Streets Of Paris).

EDIT: Also, anybody else spot the shout-out to Tintin? The wooden idol floating off the floor right at the beginning is almost certainly the Arumbaya fetish from Tintin and the Broken Ear. Heheheheh.

Actually, in explaining what the comics were to Starr, I realized the best way to explain what the series is to someone unfamiliar with French comics:

Adele Blanc-Sec is Hellboy, only in WWI era France, with an incredibly forthright woman as the lead instead of a big friendly Demon. And it was written 25 years earlier.

Hehe. Modesty Blaise. Whatta viper. :itsmagic:

As for more info, what else do you want to know about Adele?

The plots are half dry wit, half ADVENTURE (very Tintin-like there... but that's something common to many European comics featuring independant adventuring heroes) and half WTF (wun hunnert fiddy per-cent!).

The books as a whole are comparable to standard Euro-adventure fare, but have a sort of sardonic, cynical feel to them which is kind of at odds with the ludicrous mad scientists, hibernation chambers, mummies, steampunk ape-men, etc. that populate the pages. Probably on account of Adele's general attitude.

I mean, the books are still good fun, but they're much less... "cheerful" than Hellboy. The ones set after WWI (
Adele actually misses the war, she's stuck in a hibernation chamber for the duration, between two books
) are kind of darker, for what I imagine are obvious reasons.

I thought the comics were "pretty good", but that trailer does make the movie look like a lot of fun. I have to admit that what I'm looking forward to most is the director being done with this and going back to making original movies
by which I mean "movies that have homages to a million other movies but are totally great anyway"
The trailer actually disappoints me a little. O'Malley himself kept saying how the movie was basically going to be the books line-for-line, and that's definitely not what it turned into.

I'm still totally pumped and am actually going to make an attempt to see it on opening night though.

Oh, and total spoilers about
the sword level up and ex girlfriend
in there.

Having just sat down and read the whole thing to date I feel like this is a story that would work a lot better as a two hour movie than as 1200 pages of comic.

Well, that confirmed my suspicion that Michael Cera won't make a good Scott Pilgrim. A doe-eyed milquetoast does not a compelling protagonist make.

Is Scott Pilgrim really what you would call a "compelling protagonist", though?  Doe-eyed milquetoast seems like fairly good descriptors.

He's ignorant and hotheaded and therein moves the plot along. You're supposed to root for him...? I just don't buy Michael Cera as bullish buy any stretch of the imagination.
