The series has been off the air coming on ten years
Wha--?
(Looks it up)
...Jesus Christ, Bal, I'm ALREADY in a "my God time is slipping away from me" frame, and you had me scared for a minute there.
Six years is NOT what I would call "coming on ten years".
and the last movie, released when the series was at it's absolute height as cultural icon, was a colossal failure.
Colossal failure in what sense? It wasn't movie of the year, but it didn't bomb.
If you mean more in terms of whether it worked as an X-Files story, though, I'm inclined to agree. Not only did it fail at that, it brought the show down with it. Once X-Files got popular, it was never quite the same.
Not only that, but the promotion has been terrible (I didn't even know it was coming out until a couple weeks ago), and it's coming out right in the middle of the strongest movie summer in probably a decade. What a pointless endeavor.
Those two things are related. Who's going to bother to promote it when it comes out the week after Dark Knight and the same week as the new Will Ferrell movie?
Anyway. I've seen pretty much everything else I want to see (except the new Will Ferrell movie and Pineapple Express), so I'll probably give it a look; why not? I wouldn't say I'm excited about it, but it's something to do.
