Legolas will appear in The Hobbit.

I don't know who will scream harder, Orlando Bloom fangirls or Tolkien purists.

There's nothing weird about Legolas being in Mirkwood at the time of The Hobbit, other than the fact that he is now mentioned by name.

It beats the hell out of Arwen suddenly becoming Gandalf.

Yeah, the Elven King who imprisons the Dwarves in Mirkwood is Thranduil, Legolas's dad.  Jackson is really taking absolutely no liberties in putting Legolas there.  Hell, he and Gloin get in a big bitchy argument about it at the Council of Elrond.

It beats the hell out of Arwen suddenly becoming Glorfindel.

Not really.  Glorfindel is one of those "who the fuck is this guy?" guys in LOTR, one of the ones who's got some huge backstory but is really only there for one scene and then is referenced a few more times as being a Big Deal.

Arwen, likewise, is a blink-and-you'll-miss-her background character who then shows up at the end and is treated like she's really important.  She's huge in the subtext of Aragorn's motivations, but her role is small-time to a casual reader.

Combining the two of them into one character so that Arwen is more important to the story makes good sense.

But I won't defend all that "Oh yeah, she's dying now for some reason" bullshit in the third movie.

(As for Gandalf's role in the Flight to the Fords, it's stated that he and Elrond are in Rivendell casting the spells that cause the river to swell and sweep away the Ringwraiths.  Gandalf takes credit for shaping the waves like horses.  We see Elrond casting the spell in the movie, and we see the horses; I don't think it's particularly important that we don't see Gandalf until the next scene.)

Arwen gets a whole Appendix about her though, I think.  That's something.

Meanwhile I thought Glorfindel was the elf who shows up at Helm's Deep and everyone's like "who the fuck is this guy?", but I guess that's Haldir.  Kind of hard to keep your glowing blonde douchebags straight, especially when they're not supposed to be blonde.

I'm fine with Legolas being in the Hobbit, since he would have actually been around. I was also fine with Glorfindel being replaced by Arwen.

See, it's not changes to the original text that make me angry; when they're done for good reasons (see: giving Arwen more screentime/development) I have no problem with them. Hitchhiker's Guide was changed in some way for each and every adaptation: this makes sense. Some things work better in a radio play, a tv show, a movie, a book, etc.

It's when they go full Filmamir that it starts to irritate me.

Glorfindel was an elf lord named after the elf lord who killed a Balrog in Gondolin. That's... pretty much the extent of his background. Haldir didn't show up at Helm's deep in the book, either (no elves did). He was put in to show the elves were contributing something, while in the book it was explained (later on) that they were busy fighting off forces from Mirkwood.

The thing about Tolkien is that most of everything is explained in the appendixes, because LotR is from the point of view of the Hobbits except briefly when it's just Aragorn/Gimli/Legolas alone. Nobody told the Hobbits what was going on in the state of the world, they were basically just baggage. So if you want to know why the elves never sent anyone to help at Helm's Deep or Gondor, you have to read the appendixes. Trouble is, most people can't even stand the boring pace of the actual books, much less an index of info dump.

The fangirls, by far. I don't know how much exposure you've actually had to real life full blown fangirls, but they are basically the noisiest thing on earth.

Meanwhile, the fat neckbeards who want everything 100% the way it was in the book because they are stupid and do not understand how adaptations work will only be able to mutter and post bitterly before having to brb my larping group is here and I am almost finished with my Huan costume Pete's gf is playing Luthien and she is going to ride me around

Well, that or someone tells the character about what happened after the fact. Case-in-point: Gandalf telling Frodo about his battle with Saruman, or Boromir telling Aragorn in his dying breath about how he fought off six million orcs.
