The Last Stand -- EXCLUSIVE Final Trailer

This actually looks like a movie that's smart enough not to take itself seriously. Could be a lot of fun!

<Milo> Lethal Weapon 5?
<Milo> Christ, how many people have to be desperate for that movie to get made?
<Arty> not really.
<Arty> everything is six now. trilogies are out.
<QED2> this time, when murtaugh says he's too old for this shit, we will really believe him
<QED2> mel gibson will play both briggs and murtaugh
<QED2> though his use of blackface will be described as 'unfortunate'

Well, I see a monkey-man with a staff in the freezeframe.  Without watching, I think I can say with about 90% certainty that it's a Journey to the West.

You would be right. Based on a cursory search, it's actually a prequel to one of Stephen Chow's older movies which itself is loosely based on Journey to the West. The trailer looked pretty crap, so I'm not going to hold high hopes for this movie. However, the source material that they have to work with is fantastic, though not necessarily suited to a movie adaptation. The story's pretty episodic in nature, so it's actually much better suited to a TV adaptation and has already been adapted plenty of times. I would recommend reading it though. Having said that, I've only read the abridged version myself. It's pretty great. Basically five bros dicking around through ancient China and India while on their way to get some sacred Buddhist scriptures. (There's also the set up which is the origin story of Sun Wukong and the rest of the cast, which is rad, and then their journey home, which is less rad but mercifully short. And necessary I guess to complete the character arcs.) Not only is it fun, but it's culturally relevant to Chinese people in the way Snow White or Hansel and Gretel is to the Western world. Really, if there is any piece of Chinese culture you should absorb, it's probably Journey to the West.

It's one of the Four Great Classical Novels of China so, yeah.  The problem is that all four of these things are goddam epics - it took me about a year off and on to slog through Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and that was with a lot of commentary to help follow what the hell was going on.  If Journey has any advantage over the others, it's that it's not about a war and doesn't have hundreds of characters all named Ping Pong running around doing basically the same sort of shit to each other.

Also whenever the topic comes up people tend to mention Journey, Romance and Water Margin and leave out Dream of the Red Chamber.  Apparently an epic-length adolescent fuckfest doesn't really have the traction in the West that stories of people fighting or killing each other endlessly do.

I learned all I know about from Journey to the West from Dragon Ball.
That's good enough, right?

The problem with Dream of the Red Chamber (I prefer calling it Story of the Stone because I imagine some guy writing like five thousand pages about a rock going on adventures and learning life lessons and shit. Which, I might add, is the premise of Journey to the West) is exactly as you outlined. Also you can't really make a video game out of 18th century Chinese aristocracy's melodrama.

Also, the reason I linked to the Waley translation is specifically due to its brevity; he cuts out most of the episodes in the middle, but keeps the general structure of the story intact. If you finish it and find yourself wanting more adventures, you'll know there's hundreds or thousands of pages more to read.
