Coming Soon
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:58:11 AM »

Guillermo del Toro to direct The Hobbit.

Also: god damn Peter Jackson lost a lot of weight.

Also also: apparently there will be a FIFTH movie bridging the gap between Hobbit and LotR.  Not sure how I feel about that -- what happens in those years that isn't already implied in the FotR movie?  Granted, I haven't read through The History of The Lord of the Rings (I made it through the FIRST five posthumously-published Middle Earth books, but conked out somewhere after the fourth version of The Children of Hurin, which apparently is not enough as THERE IS ANOTHER VERSION COMING), but between the LotR appendices and Unfinished Tales I don't remember enough material in that timeframe to justify a whole movie.  I'd ask for anyone who's read The Treason of Isengard to chime in, but I'm guessing I'm the only person here who made it as far as The Lays of Beleriand.

If all the minutiae were cut out and it were boiled down to its essential elements, The Silmarillion could actually make a pretty damned amazing epic under the right writer and director.  But the odds of it coming out as something watchable compared to the odds of it being a huge clusterfuck are not good, which I assume is why Jackson and New Line are more comfortable with putting together a Hobbit sequel instead.

I have read basically all of the extraneous material (I R HUEG TOLKEEN NURD), but it's been a LONG FREAKING TIME since I read THoME 1-12 and (more importantly) I don't really like the movies at all, so I'll forebear to comment.

P.S. The Children of Hurin came out over 6 months ago, if not a year. I have a copy and it's fairly lame in that you're basically paying $35 for a hardcover of just the Narn i Hin Hurin.

Tangent: do books still have a higher dollar price in Canada than the US, even though your dollar's better than ours now (or was at least about even last I heard)?

Yes they do. Most of the books I've seen in stores still have a markup.  It's to do with shipping or stocking or some nonsense.

When I came back from visiting my parents in Canada on New Year's Day and went to change twenty Canadian dollars to US currency at the border, I got back less than twenty dollars US, so I think the US dollar is just the slightest bit stronger at the moment.

According to oanda.com's currency converter, 1 Canadian dollar is worth 98 US cents today. That's not counting the conversion fees you'd get at a bank or such.

And it still doesn't account for how hard Canadians are being raped at retail right now.

I don't get raped at all. If a product is artificially marked up here I buy it from an american place online now and gladly pay the shipping. If all Canadians who could do this did so. The problem would go away very quickly.

Ah, Warner Brothers. Simultaneously cutting a fantasy movie in half, claiming to fans it is to ensure the integrity of the story, and not a milking tactic at all (see also: Deathly Hollows).

Meanwhile, Wildly Popular 'Iron Man' Trailer To Be Adapted Into Full-Length Film (!)

Technically this would be appear to be adding an unnecessary sequel, not cutting the movie in half.

Not coming THAT soon, but per Nrama, Marvel's shooting for Iron Man 2 and Thor in '10, and then Cap and Avengers in '11.  (Also, Punisher 2 later this year, Wolverine next year, Ant-Man TBD.)

Marvel uniting all its characters under one banner and trying to create a film "universe" is plenty ambitious.  Of course, everybody loves crossovers, and that's part of how Marvel made it big in the '60's, by having its characters meet regularly.  Obviously this is a lot trickier in movies than comics, especially if you want to maintain a consistent cast (which I suspect is the biggest reason the Justice League movie got shitcanned; if you can't get Routh and Bale, what's the point?).

First they hit me with Hulk. I was like, cool. Gonna see that.

And then they were all DARK KNIGHT and I was all WELL NO FUCKING SHIT I'M GONNA SEE THAT

And then Narnia and I was like hey that's cool wow three movies in a row

and THEN it was like HOLY SHIT INDIANA JONES and it was like four fucking movies in a row I want to see

this is unheard of, really

and then it was all M NIGHT FUCKAFACE'S THE HAPPENING

WHAT IS HAPPENING

I DON'T KNOW

MARK WALBERG IS LOOKING SHOCKED FOR 2 HOURS I GUESS

and then on the way out I saw a poster for fucking X Files and I was ok shit that's 5 fucking movies I want to see damn them

...all of which are sequels.

I mean, I intend to see them all too.  It'd just be nice to see fewer remakes and sequels.  And adaptations of TV shows (though Carell and Arkin are absolutely perfect for Max and the Chief).

Nice to see superhero movies getting taken seriously, though.  Ten years ago, I don't think anybody would have figured Downey for Iron Man and Norton for Hulk.

Actually, the strongest thing going for the X-Files move is that it isn't really a sequel - it's a sequel in the same way that Serenity was a sequel to Firefly.

The Incredible Hulk isn't a sequel.

Judging from the trailer, Banner begins the story in South America, so there is continuity. However, I've read the flashbacks tell of a different origin story than the 2003 flick.

The Happening isn't a sequel.

FTFY, although it'll be apart of the Tweest Saga all the same.
