the reason niku does not mix up his driving choices: every time i use something i'm comfortable with, i get a star or two.  every time i don't, i don't.  :(

Thoughts on balance:

1. There should be fewer attacks that can't be dodged.  We've got, what, lightning, Pow, blue shell?  (I think all those can be avoided if you have a star, but not if you've got something simple like a banana peel.  Which is about what you can expect if you're doing well enough.)
2. Items that fuck the guy in first place but don't actually help the person who uses them need to go.  Lightning's not going to help you if you're in 12th place.
3. If they're going to weight items to what place you're in, there should be weight for what course you're on too.  Oh, I'm in 12th place on Rainbow Road and I just got a gold mushroom.  Thanks, game, I can totally use that if I want to fall off the edge again.

Rubberbanding is a topic all its own, and all in all I feel like the single-player is less a game of skill and more a game of luck and rote memorization.  Which would be all right, I suppose, if I could unlock shit while doing online multiplayer.  (Uh, I can't, can I?)

You can unlock a few things by winning WiFi matches, but I don't think the requirements are reasonable.

There's about 2-3 methods per secret of unlocking things. You can get about 75% of the content without enduring 150cc.

Unfortunately, Dry Bowser is like: Star Rank Four Cups in 150cc OR Race 4,350 times.

Should I shoot you in the right leg, or the left?

Unlocking Time Trial stuff is pretty fun. I rock Dry Bones on the Bullet Bike all the time.

Is Dry Bones as disgustingly overpowered here as he was in Mario Kart DS?

He's got the same bikes as any other light kart.  Kind of like in Mario kart ds.  You can't really say one character is overpowered when they can all use the same bikes/karts for the same weight/height classes.

Ah, okay.

And yeah, I meant how he was prior to unlocking all carts for all characters.  At which point it was Dry Bones's carts that were far and away the best choice.

The bigger problem, I think, is that most of the HIT EVERYTHING LOLZ items also cause everyone to lose their own items.  That shouldn't be nearly as common as it is.

I hate blue shells and always have, but I feel like...their frequency in racing has gone up a lot.  I get hit so damn much in 1 race with blue shells, I sometimes wonder if anyone gets anything but them.

So I tried the Tournament today. Got 1:54, putting me in the top 5 of my local region. Neat!

Well duh.  They killed the courses and the mode.  I'm still depressed about it--I kept wishing they'd fix it and then they just never did :(

Although, dumb as the fucking course is, skyscraper is improved.

Right, meant to mention that too.

Now, there IS a good reason for it -- it's to keep you from hanging on to, say, a Bullet Bill until the last 30 seconds of the race.  But I'd say nerfing the Bill would be the better solution.

I have yet to see or get a Bullet Bill in a multiplayer match, online or off.

In the demo kiosk at my gamestop, in one race, I got two Bullet Bills.

Another point I forgot to mention:

You know how it is common, in many genres, to make the player invulnerable for a couple seconds after being hit?

It sure would be nice if, for example, I couldn't get hit with a blue shell-pow-red shell-green shell combo right before the fucking finish line.  (This is the behavior that my friend used to hyberbolically compare to a heinous act of violence.)

Getting itemwhored out of first is part of Mario Kart.  It sucks for you, but it's awesome for the other player to have a shot at the wire.

1. You don't need to get itemwhored to get out of first.  One item is enough to knock you out of first.
2. In the instances I am talking about, "the other player" is not actually a person, so I could give a good goddamn about the rubberbanding motherfucker's feelings.  Though I suppose I can really fold this point under "I shouldn't have to play single-player, ever."
