Brutal Legend
« on: October 05, 2009, 08:17:22 AM »

Just got back from preordering the game. I'm looking forward to it -- I've been itching for a big sprawling adventure game lately and BL looks like a decent sized rake. Plus, any game (or really, anything) that pays homage to Frank Frazetta and bases itself off of his style is okay in my book.

I have a boner the size of Scotland for Tim Schafer's work, so I'm getting this.

Played the demo, definitely getting it.  The gameplay wasn't incredible, yet it was fun and kinda slick, all the same.  Lots of character, and good music. :perfect:

I would be very saddened if a game that looks to have the  viable alternate title of ROCK THE FUCK OUT: YOU HAVEN'T ROCKED THE FUCK OUT HARD ENOUGH YET had bad music.

I met Scott C. at SPX. He was friendly and awesome and I somehow managed not to nerdgasm all over him. Needless to say, I preordered this game that very night.

Also, the demo was pretty excellent.

The game's soundtrack seems focused entirely on ROCKING THE FUCK OUT.

Got it earlier this morning. I'm not far in, but so far the gameplay hasn't made me pop any boners (to be fair, though, all it needs is one absolutely brilliant sequence to have my eternal love, like Waterloo World in Psychonauts).

Nevertheless, I have been smiling every second I've played. Goes without saying that the game is pretty funny. Not really in a laugh-out-loud sort of way, but in a way that makes you feel happy and warm inside. A longer lasting funny.

Ozzy Osborne sells you upgrades. He gave me a free guitar that shoots hot love.

Brilliant atmosphere. The game itself comes across as sort of a mix of Overlord, Fable, and Ocarina of Time (in that you're playing an instrument for your most powerful spells), but the world design is just phenomenal.

Actually, the Zelda comparison is pretty apt. The open world is basically what every 3D Zelda's Hyrule Field failed to achieve: a majestic, varied landscape equally suited to walking or riding.

I'm enjoying the game a lot but the infinite identical ambush missions are kind of lame. It's a good thing I can just play FACEMELTER and finsih them in like 10 seconds

I like the Ambushes a lot better than Use Your Terrible Car Machine Gun to Point at Enemies While Your Troops Misinterpret Your Orders.

So are you guys saying this game sucks, but I should get it anyway?

'Cause, you know, I already have Psychonauts.

Don't even look at multiplayer until you've beaten Lionwhyte and reunited with the crew. There are spoilers.

Frocto, no, this game is better than Psychonauts. Psychonauts was brilliant but really, really uneven; it felt like a traditional 3D platformer formula, but all the variables had irregular coefficients. Too many kinds of collections, but not enough uses for several of your abilities.

Brutal Legend takes the Fable-style fantasy epic and tweaks it only a little bit. I thought the individual unit commands were kind of sloppy at first, but I hadn't yet acquired all my options for control at that point. Overall, the level of quality is consistently higher, even if there haven't been many super-excellent bits like Lungfishopolis. Besides, I'm only half there.

Niku was talking in the channel today about how gorgeous this game is, and he's right. This game is fucking beautiful. The seaside cliffs made of amps are pretty breathtaking, and the set piece immediately after fighting Lionwhyte--well, I can't say any more. You'll see.

Ditto.

ANYWAY, I'm pretty sure I've about done all there is to be done in the initial area -- I've completed every side mission, murdered every beast Brian Posehn told me to, I'm pretty sure I've unbound every possible statue and raised every relic, got every available upgrade from Ozzy Osborne and I have over 500 Fire Tributes. Alls that's left is... (sigh) the escort mission that'll open up the next area. I just can't seem to protect that damn tour bus. I'm almost positive my machine gun is doing damage to it, but that couldn't be right, because that would be retarded. A climactic battle against Lionwhyte.

Psychonauts is easily one of the worst games I have ever played. I will never stop saying this.

Yeah, you'd probably hate this, then. Better stay away.
