Dorf Fort Succession Interest Thread
« on: October 05, 2009, 10:59:22 AM »

Post interest in doing a Dorf Fort succession game.

Post interest in desired starting conditions and terrain.

I wish to participate but not to necessarily go first.

You get a week to play an in-game year. You take screen-shots and record a little journal(optional, but always loved.) If nothing else, try to keep track of what you did and what happened and give us a Cliff Notes summary. You can do whatever the fuck you actually like but we reserve the right to reboot from last save if you intentionally break shit.

As soon as "Spring Has Arrived!" pops up, that's it. Save, lock it down, wipe away your tears and contact me.

This Space To Be Updated.

I can't participate, but I can still offer unsolicited suggestions!

Construct an outpost by the seashore, so that it can be a wharf fortress.

NO AQUIFIERS.

MAGMA PLEASE. (barring this, an extremely heavily forested area.)

I'm in. I'll even go first, if nobody else wants. My preferences:

-access to trees
-access to permanent water: either water running from off the map (a brook or larger) or a shoreline
-I like sand
-magma's pretty nice; there are utilities you can use to verify its presence
-Hidden Fun Stuff would be cool since latter-day DF has such easygoing fauna, but it's even harder to find than magma, and less likely to be relevant for most of the succession; again, there are utilities if you want to find it for certain
-surviving megabeasts somewhere in the world would also be cool, but it's pretty low-priority

Alternately, you could just find a suitably evil worldgen recipe from this thread and we can cope as best we might. (I like this one.) After all: "Losing is fun!"

I can dig it.

I'd prefer to go somewhat early, unless we are playing on a super-small map.  I hate running at 25 FPS or lower, which happens to me on big maps in the late game.

Regarding resources, I'd like sand, aboveground river, magma (and associated obsidian).  Wouldn't mind a fort in an evil zone with ZOMBIE GOASTS that make my dwarves go EVEN FASTER.  Heavily forested is nice but not necessary.

Definitely want trading with humans and dwarves.  Don't care either way about elves, though they are an alternative lumber source.

I haven't played for a long time, have any major changes come down the pipe in the last year or so?

No new versions since September '08.  Toady really seems adverse to small incremental updates.

There have been lots of incremental versions in the past, but this year was basically a from-the-ground-up rewrite of several major systems, almost certainly to the point where any release would be basically unplayable. IIRC Toady mentioned he wanted to get a new version out by the end of the year but that he probably wouldn't make that deadline.

In the meantime, the DF community's made improvements to the game's OpenGL code to improve the overall framerate and allow you to zoom the main view out, among other things.

I never could figure out, is it possible to take screenshots without pausing and hitting Print Screen?

Started up a new game as a warm-up, the prepared food economy dominates as usual.

First caravan comes in, I trade a few stacks of dwarven wine roasts for their entire stock, which includes a stack of dwarven cheese.

I then make a single stack of dwarven cheese roast worth more than 12k monies and buy out the next caravan with that item alone.

Does anyone actually trade items besides prepared food?  I eventually start selling off giant cave spider silk clothing, as well as other high value items, but I've played a 10+ year fortress trading essentially nothing but roasts.

I usually start with stonecraft trinkets and switch entirely to narrow goblin armor after I've repelled the first siege (most likely with a drowning chamber rather than a proper military).

Mechanisms are pretty good value at the start of the game. Later yeah I sell what the enemies drop plus bone/shell crafts.

I extort every human and elven caravan I see. I only sell mass craftables if A) I get a legendary crafter and B) I gotta get bins set up anyway.

The first part of that sentence(I demand tribute from all lesser humanoids) may be important for anyone who goes after me.

Gonna write up some sort of list tomorrow or Thursday and go.

Apparently cheese made from the milk of the purring maggot has the highest base item value in the game.

Doom

Maybe: Geo, Constantine?

Decrees: NO AQUIFIERS! Magma and/or Heavy Forests, please! Glass-making Sand if you can swing it, but don't go crazy over it.

Anyways I will ask Esperath or Newbie to go first and actually gen the map.

Norondor's in as the fifth.

Esperath has agreed to gen and claims he can stasify most/all conditions! Looking forward to your journal and my own chance to "improve" a working fortress, heh heh.

Da List, Finalized, with room for new folks. With so few as it is, we're probably gonna loop for now.. try to pull it off in a week or less per turn, fellas.
