I just got back from climbing a decent bit of Mont Saint-Hilaire.

There was about half a mile of this:

If you listen carefully, you can hear these ancient stones speak. Mostly I could hear them say "dude, you're fat, daaaaamn".

Man I wish my camera didn't suck. Oh well. I hadn't been to this area in about fifteen years, so it was no surprise we picked the wrong trail and reached a peak that was about 40 meters lower than the one we actually wanted to go to. It wasn't the view I had hoped to recapture, but it was still pretty awesome. My region is hella flat except for the occasional hill such as the one I was standing on, and the horizon was, like, waaay the fuck over there.

Wish I could show it better, but that's about as far as my camera could get without fading to white:

Also it I saw this:

And my first thought was: "whoa, these trees are a live, vegetal Pietà". I dunno, it struck me.

I got some more pictures but these are by far the least crappy of the lot. I think it might be time to invest in a better camera. Though in a way I'm glad I brought a cheap one because I fell on the way back down those stone steps and it flew right out of my pocket. I'll probably be limping for a few days at least, but eh, I'm still glad I went.

Nearly broke my back straining to get this photo setup in my room.  Having to snake my body around the lights and have my head close to the ground for the angle I was looking for.

Also my shoes are beat to shit.

Self-portrait for today:

Question: Does the border look cheap?  I like adding some black around the image so that it pops more in your view, but I'm not sure if the full border around this image is too much.

Added borders always bother me, from a web design standpoint if nothing else.

If I come to Texas, will you fashion advise me? For some reason all that together looks really cool.

I agree. It gives the picture a very antique feel, like one of those old photos with the border already on it.

Now if he was making a sour face because there was a clamp holding his neck still, the illusion would be complete.

It's a new month, time for a new self-portrait:

Oh, can you believe I was only 25 when I took that last portrait?  Oh how time flies.

I'm taking a mandatory photography class right now and I hate it. I'm easily one of the worst people in the class (if not THE worst). I'm amazed at how so many untrained people can take these amazing shots. Out of the 40-50 pictures I take each week, I'm lucky to find one or two that looks decent. ...I can never find the right f-stop or shutter speed until it's too late to take the picture I want.

Photography is like anything else. You do it enough times and you're gonna' get something pretty.

Being a good photographer isn't about getting prettier shots, it's about getting them more consistently, and knowing when to sacrifice parts of the image.

Does your camera have automatic mode?  Here's my little secret:  I live on aperture priority.  I know how to do the math in my head manually, but with aperture control I can get shots quickly without having to think beyond lining up the composition.  I'll use manual for night shots, when using my lights, and when composing light painting shots but not much else.  It's good to know the formulas (Sunny 16 is a must) but to adhere to them religiously is basically just trying to show off photographer penis.

Also, the best quote you can take to heart is "If your photo isn't good enough, you're not close enough" by Robert Capa, who died by stepping on a land mine.

Finally, the one thing most amateurs don't seem to get is that photography only begins at the press of the shutter.  Unless you're using slide film, the process of creation carries on into the darkroom/lightroom.

We're strictly using digital cameras. I also have to keep track of my aperture and shutter speed because I have to write them on the back of each picture I turn in. I think that by the time I get comfortable taking pictures, the quarter will be over... there's only five more classes, and one of those is for the midterm and one is for the final, so I probably only have three more photo weeks. I hope I have an easier time when I move on to video cameras.
