Kongoh Bancho
« on: October 25, 2009, 04:12:24 PM »

I only discovered this manga a few days ago, but I love the shit out of it. It is a tale of manly men doing manly fighting, a story full of Burning Spirit© in quantities second only to Gurren Lagaan.

I knew I would be following it right after the first chapter when the titular character breaks into a Yakuza Stronghold full of gun toting thugs wielding... a car.

Check it out! You must!

It's seriously about as ridiculously tongue-in-cheek as "two hands."

Which is part of it's secret, magical, stupid appeal.  :nyoro~n:

Actually I think the two-hands thing was supposed to be completely serious.

Right. That is what I'm implying. Kongoh Bancho is supposed to be completely serious but is unintentionally fucking hilarious and stupidly awesome.

Well that or it was some sort of dare to write a shonen that takes itself seriously while being intentionally fucking hilarious that adds a layer of meta unintentional hilarity and awesomeness.

Kongoh Bancho is a serious shounen manga, just like Devil May Cry is a serious action game with a deep story.

That is to say it purposely does shit as over the top as it can simply for the hilarity of it. I am pretty sure it knows it's being stupid as hell and revels in it.

I like that the most recent chapters feature
the entire cast dying
, and there doesn't seem to be a regular scanlation group behind this one.

I think it's more horrifically creepy than adorable, but that's just me.

Chapter 53 and 54 are up.

They've gone too far this time. They've broken a barrier that should have stayed strong. And now they're going to have to contend with the ramifications of their recklessness.

The four-page splash. The world will never be the same again.

Ultimately ineffective, but it's good to see an enemy that doesn't sit around for 10 minutes waiting for the main character's charge-up attack to finish building up.

Bah.  He does that because he's a filthy robot, incapable of manly expression.  He's not hot-blooded at ALL.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

The four-page splash.

I expected the page 16/17 splash to have "TIME!!" in a big word bubble.
