Cartoons of My Youth
« on: April 30, 2008, 04:46:40 AM »

I just watched an old Tom and Jerry cartoon in which the mouse convinces the cat that he has been repeatedly attempting suicide.  As the cat sleeps, he places a gun in the cat's hand and points it at his face, then he slips a noose around his neck, then he places a knife in his hand and covers the knife and the cat's chest in fake blood.

Finally, the cat gets wise, and places the mouse in glass bottle where the cork is tied to the trigger of a gun pointed at the bottle, so that if the mouse attempts to escape, the gun will shoot him.

That is the most demented fucking shit I've ever god damned seen.  And I'm positive that I saw it when I was little.  Did I have any idea what I was seeing?

There are also the old Ren and Stimpy cartoons I grew up watching; you know, like the one where Stimpy gets a fan club and Ren becomes so consumed with jealousy that he hovers over Stimpy as he sleeps and talks about how twisting his head until his neck snaps.

Then this happens:

My point is that I did not grow up well adjusted.

I'm sure Captain Planet and G.I. Joe balanced it out.

Oh hey, I was wondering when the new Bleakness and Childhood Trauma thread would show up.

FEED ME! ARGH!

Also suitable because the writer was freaked out by the Tom & Jerry cartoon above. May as well pass the horror on in some small way, eh, Paul?

The funniest thing is that the Tom and Jerry cartoons that show on TV have been edited to make them more appropriate for children, and the Ren and Stimpy episode you refer to was made AFTER John K was fired for putting too much adult content in the show.  In other words, this is the stuff that got PAST the network censors.

Tom and Jerry's an amazing damn cartoon -- its audience is international due to the lack of dialogue (in most of them, not all), it has some of the best music of the old cartoons, and yeah, it's one of the most violent -- the funny thing is that really, Itchy and Scratchy doesn't exaggerate its source material that much.

I can't remember what it was called, but there's an old Warner Brothers cartoon where these two mice gaslight a cat until he has no sense of reality anymore. I can't remember all the details, but I remember loving it.

All Itchy and Scratchy ever did was change the sweat back to blood.

I suppose it was meant to showcase more puns with the afterlife-themed commercials.

Also, nice fuckin' CG model.
