Yeah, Tim's name comes up a lot in conjunction with it, and not just because of that article he wrote a few years back. Most of what he writes is idle word-wasting, but some people (like Niku, or myself) seem to enjoy it regardless. Occasionally he'll write with a purpose in mind and the results are far more worthwhile.

I find it vaguely reassuring that the only time I ever really pwn anyone on here its almost entirely by accident (and in this case, a side effect of my not knowing what the hell anyone was talking about in the first place).

The linearity mentioned is still extremely disturbing to me. No towns? Seriously? Will probably pass.

Again, this has already been done, and it wasn't a horrible disaster or anything.  Also just like TWEWY, the game probably does not features "towns" per se only because the entire damned game takes place in an urban environment.  Believe me, you will not miss having to hunt down a shop in order to buy proper equipment for the area you're in.

The main complaint I had about CC's linear progression is that you could never backtrack, ever, at any point.  The game eventually dumps you rather unceremoniously into the final dungeon, and you have no choice but to do or die at that point.  As Rosencrantz pointed out though the reports say this one's more like FFX where they push you along the same way but at the end finally give you an airship to jet around the world in, in true FF fashion, so that's okay.  It's not like there's ever really good reason to explore old areas until the end of the game anyway.

The difference with Crisis Core is that maps are actually constructed so there a bunch of sections that are mazes or alternate paths, like the missions. And while a lot of sections it is pretty much point A to B, there are still lots of turns to take so there is a degree of interactivity in it's exploration. It's not a literally straight line throughout the game.

I was reading The Great Shark Hunt the other night and the Tim Rogers comparison popped into my mind on its own. The most immediately obvious difference being, of course, that Thompson wrote about things that are dramatic and funny and frightening and daring and that people care about, whereas Tim Rogers writes about video games.

Reading Tim Rogers makes me feel bad for not prioritizing my time better. Reading Hunter S. Thompson makes me feel like there's nothing better I could be doing.

Yes, this.

Relating to the actual article, though, I like that square's apparently realizing that Wakka was the best part of FFX and that what their games need are more Regular Dudes.

Turn off annotations.

I think that pink-haired girl and magical black dude are all the imaginary evidence I needed to say that FF13 is worth playing with absolutely no real evidence to back me up.

Doom you know I'm all about the bubbly hotties, and friend to the colored man, but I've yet to hear anything about FFXIII that does not point to it being legendarily awful.

Aaaaaand one Tim Rogers preview later I've become interested and hopeful. You know, I wonder if the reason I like the guy's reviews so much is that the very prospect of arguing against each monolithic wall of text seems far too daunting to even bother thinking about.

Well that and he declared Gears 2 Game of the ALL TIME FOREVER <3 <3

Niku just pointed out Tim has now posted an actual review. He even made a 12-paragraph "short" review of the game for people with no patience for his digressions. SPOILER: The game's an engaging catastrophe that fails in far more ways than it succeeds. Unsurprised. Disappointingly, I'm still going to buy it and enjoy liking the good parts and disliking the bad parts.

Sometimes I wonder if I secretly prefer disliking the bad parts. It's an open secret that I like some bad parts.
