Bayonetta
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:19:42 AM »

I went out and bought it this morning. And about two hours in, I can safely say that anyone who has a problem with Bayonetta the character is wrong. Everything about her, and thus the game, is so over-the-top, and so tongue-in-cheek that the tongue pulls a chest burster on the cheek. Less than ten minutes in she's piledriving three angels at once to the tune of something that sounds an awful lot like "Fly me to the Moon". It's that sort of campy that wraps around itself dozens of times, fluctuating wildly between 'hilarious' and 'awesome'. And even though I had already seen some of the first Climax attack in the game, it was way more fun when I was rapidly tapping the X button to apply hundreds of gigatons of pressure to kill off the boss.

Other observations: well, shit. You've read the reviews, haven't you? Apparently it's the best of its genre. I can't say for certain myself, but damned if I'm not having a blast. It also sort of reminds me of Shadow Hearts, in the best possible way: the general, "small village-in-rural-Europe foiled by Japanese insanity'-esque atmosphere is very similar.

So yeah, I really like it so far. My only real complaint so far is that sometimes I can't actually tell what I'm doing or if there's an attack coming, but that's usually not a big deal due to how smooth the game is.

What about the torture attacks where you can snuff angels by making them orgasm on razor horses?

You need the whip for that. I prefer the katana, which summons a guillotine.

EDIT: I was mistaken, the Torture attacks are based on context. In the case of the razor horse, you have to be fighting a Joy angel, who's basically an angelic clone of Bayonetta herself. Oh, and they don't orgasm to death, Bayonetta splits them in two on the horse while simultaneously ripping off their head with a whip.

I think the problem with Bayonetta the character is that she only works in her own context.  In the inevitable mountains of fanart she becomes the exact sort of thing the game is desperately trying to suck all the piss out of with an industrial bilge pump.

Also I'm a grump and don't like Devil May Cry clones.  :humpf:

Aside from the straight out porn, most of the stuff I've seen seems to understand the intent behind Bayonetta.

You can somewhat game the system by making sure you have nothing except unreleased games in your queue and time a return so that it's received a day or two before new release days.

The trade off is not having anything to do in-between games if you only have 1 game at a time.

:wat:
She's supposed to be a brainless bimbo?  But bimbo's aren't sexy!  They're just used as sex objects--there's a difference!  Librarians of a moderate or greater degree of attractiveness are sexy!  And bimbo's aren't badass either!  Bayonetta is supposed to be the epitome of sexy and very much a badass!  Plus you can't have a believable bimbo witch character.

I'm just amused that that's the same joke someone made on Shadow Moses when we were playing TF2 last night.

The Prologue really drags when you're replaying it.

Also, why is there no IMDB page for this game? I really want to know if Ronin is voiced by Greg Eagles, it's driving me insane.

GOOD FUCKING CHRIST

It is NONSENSICAL how cheap the katana is. After dying over and over on the Fortitudo (I think that's his name, the dragon with the church on its head) fight, I switched to the katana and did the default triangle combo four times and he died.

So long, fists :(

If you didn't know, RT+select skips cutscenes without having to pause.

I didn't. Neat, thanks.

Anyway, I've pretty much been using the katana since I got it. I have acquired a new weapon, and I think that I might start using it alongside the sword: Odette, a pair of ice skates. It basically turns her into a santoryu figure skater. There's even a little skirt you can buy to go with the skates.

omfg thankyou

Seriously, though, until I can get a weapons FAQ, I wanted to ask the people on here: Is there actually any reason to use the default fists over the katana? It's worth it just for the Wicked Triangle combo. All of the Wicked combos for the fists seem to be super difficult to do in comparison.

You mean the handguns or shotguns?  The benefit of them is you can hold any button in an attack for extra hits and ranged attacks.  They're generally faster, too.  The katana is a pretty good general purpose weapon, though.  The rocket tonfas are wicked badass, too.  Just use what you like, man.

Call the the rocket launchers by their proper name, Cthulu: Lt. Col. Kilgore. You get them by finding three pieces of an LP that plays "Ride of the Valkyries".

I just got them, and they do not really work like the Scarborough Fair or the Onyx Rose; they're really, and really powerful. Also: if you hold down the attack button, they fire a rocket propelled grenades. I believe it goes without saying that I've got them equipped to her boots.

I'm trying to figure out what Kilgore goes best with, though. Having them with the Katana doesn't feel right. Maybe the Durga gauntlets? Fire and napalm go together pretty well, right?

I beat it.

End Spoilers:
It ends with you punching God herself into the sun. It's even a little mini-game; you actually have to guide God around all the planets in the solar system to insure she flies into the sun. Oh, and you kill a dude by shooting a piece of lipstick into his forehead.
You can buy a costume modifier that comes with the Lt. Col. Kilgore the gives Bayonetta a bitch'n hat, shades and a yellow scarf. There's extra costumes that you can buy once you beat the game, but you can't wear both them and the hat at the same time, so I might not get them.

So, you know, this has been pretty much the slickest game ever.
