I went out and bought it this morning. And about two hours in, I can safely say that anyone who has a problem with Bayonetta the character is wrong. Everything about her, and thus the game, is so over-the-top, and so tongue-in-cheek that the tongue pulls a chest burster on the cheek. Less than ten minutes in she's piledriving three angels at once to the tune of something that sounds an awful lot like "Fly me to the Moon". It's that sort of campy that wraps around itself dozens of times, fluctuating wildly between 'hilarious' and 'awesome'. And even though I had already seen some of the first Climax attack in the game, it was way more fun when I was rapidly tapping the X button to apply hundreds of gigatons of pressure to kill off the boss.
Other observations: well, shit. You've read the reviews, haven't you? Apparently it's the best of its genre. I can't say for certain myself, but damned if I'm not having a blast. It also sort of reminds me of Shadow Hearts, in the best possible way: the general, "small village-in-rural-Europe foiled by Japanese insanity'-esque atmosphere is
very similar.
So yeah, I really like it so far. My only real complaint so far is that sometimes I can't actually tell what I'm doing or if there's an attack coming, but that's usually not a big deal due to how smooth the game is.
