Bioshock was a game with really boring gameplay but everything else about it was good.

I can't speak for MGS4, because I don't have a PS3. I assume that it is as good as MGS2, which was 2 minutes of gameplay, and then 10 minutes of codec calls.

That's, uh... not exactly a ringing endorsement.

If you are bad at first-person-shooters, like I am, and enjoy well-constructed scenery, like I do, then Bioshock is wonderful.

I dunno, it's the hallmark of several games widely accepted as good. Eternal Darkness comes to mind.

Y'think Resident Evil also falls under that?

Man, Metal Gear's cutscenses. So long, so poorly written, so frequent...

If only there were a way to... I dunno, somehow circumvent them. To "skip" them, if you would. Perhaps with the press of a button or two. That way, you could get back to the sneaking and shooting right away!

Probably. It gets vastly better in 4 and 5, but the series didn't get to have a 5 in the title because nobody bought the first 3.

I wonder how many people who're jaded against Resident Evil games were totally enraptured by their first playthrough of RE2?

chapter 3, smartass

chapter 3 does not fall under the umbrella of "good parts of MGS4" but you still cannot skip it

What, this part?

I remember being able to skip through it just fine. In fact, I think I watched that whole scene front-to-back just once. I also remember saying it could be skipped, not singing songs of praise from the highest mountain for every little bit of the game.

Still waiting for a PC version over here.

I think nobody would be complaining about the Metal Gear series if the plot had remained relatively simple, on the level of the first MGS game.  MGS2 played out like bad fanfiction, and put me off to the rest of the series until someone finally beat me around the head with MGS3.  MGS4, while it finally resolved 2 to my satisfaction, was still an ugly mess of convoluted bullshit that barely made any goddamned sense.

tl;dr I want more games like MGS1  :MENDOZAAAAA:

It's not that the story is bad, it's that Kojima needs a fucking editor. If he wrote whatever he wanted and then got Shigesato Itoi to trim down and clean up all the blathering bullshit nobody would be complaining.

Also he needs to stop making Otacon tell me what to do. I fucking can't stand Otacon.

MGS4 is basically analogous to Russel T. Davies run on Doctor Who; utterly overblown, wallowing in its own excess, often totally retarded, and constantly interrupted by the creator trying to impress you with how clever he is, but ultimately, in the end, the good outweighs the bad and you get a net positive.

Hopefully Peace Walker will be a bit more restrained, at least by the hardware if nothing else.

Yeah, the quality of the Metal Gear game seems directly linked to how limited the creators feel by the hardware.

I think the reason we all liked MGS3 better than MGS2 was that Otacton wasn't fucking present. He's just an irritating character. I get the distinct feeling that Kojima put him in as an analog to himself or a shout out to his homies in Akihabara, but to anything but the saddest sad Otaku he just comes off exactly as what he is - the saddest sad Otaku. He really is pathetic. From the first moment in MGS when you see him piss himself to him pawing at the titties of his dead stepsister in MGS2, there is not one moment in those two games where he redeems himself. Even if he turned into a ramboesque badass in MGS4 (I admit I haven't played it so I don't know how he is presented) nothing will or could ever possibly make up for how sad and fucking pathetic he was in MGS2.

I think the reason we all liked MGS3 better than MGS2 was that there was a guy who fought you with bees.

I dunno, I think it's a pretty clear comparison that MGS3 is the most beloved entry because of rampant ultra manliness.

I don't care what Raiden does in MGS4: he basically neuters the player as soon as the meat of MGS2 starts. And then you know, you get real amazing simulated bitching nagging calls from your girlfriend.

Even the Cobras are nice enough to be vaguely cryptic and then succinctly explode without stupid flashbacks.

MGS4 needed a whole lot more PILOTING REX and a lot less everything else.

MGS3 is the most beloved in the series because it is unequivocally the best one. It is the best one for a variety of reasons. The story is more tightly focused than most of them, but also it has the best pacing and best writing of any of them (notice how many of the codec transmissions are actually funny?). The wide open maps mean there is much more freedom for improvisation than the confined corridors of MGS2 (this being the actual reason MGS2 was the worst, not the story like everyone claims). Once you figure out how to use CQC effectively, it is fucking awesome and playing the earlier games without it you start to sorely miss it. There is a ton of extra bonus shit lying around for you to find on subsequent playthroughs. There is a motorcycle chase with a tank that has a space rocket on the back of it. You can wear a crocodile hat and pretend to be a crocodile.

And consider this.

How many characters in MGS3 did you find really annoying? Think about this carefully now. How often did you want to just slap someone in the mouth for wasting your life with their bullshit whinging and their unlikeable goddamn personality?

P.S. I will never understand why people love Alucard and hate Raiden. They are basically the same character except one of them can turn into a bat.

P.P.S. Shit now I want to see the MGS equivalent of Kid Dracula where Raiden is an adorable child soldier murdering dudes in Liberia with a knife
